STEVEN SOLOMON DR. JONATHAN KAZDAN headed up this project. "Drama means ‘to do‘ and it is a wonderful vehicle for selfâ€"discovery. Selfâ€"esteem is the number one issue that needs attention. This is our answer. We are working on "Growing Up Tough" is a series of short scenes and monologues that all point to the same message... we must stop and think before we go. It helps the audience see that part of growing up is making mistakes and learning from them; that life is about making choices. real life issues and giving kids real skills." There are four scenes in this perâ€" formance â€" dealing with issues such as why it‘s so hard to love one anothâ€" er; the feelings, problems, and fears adolescents share; making good choices to ensure personal health and safety; and the joy of being alive. There are about 20 students involved in "Growing Up Tough", ranging in age from 15 to 18, and they have performed at a number of eleâ€" mentary schools, but Noack would like to see it performed at a larger number of schools. "I‘m discouraged there isn‘t a more enthusiastic response, he says. "I would like people to be more proacâ€" tive in making arrangements to put the show on." Many of the student involved in "Growing Up Tough" also worked on the production which was seen on Feb. 24th at the Halton Collegiate Drama Festival. It‘s called "Ancient Flames" and explores a biblical theme to examine judgement, belief, and strength of character. This production is also written and directed by the stuâ€" dents, and if it is one of the winners at the festival, it will go on to compete at the regionals. Last year, Loyola did go on to the regionals in Guelph. "One of the most important aspects of education is arts development," Noack says. "Students gain valuable problem solving skills as well as creâ€" ativity. And we need to be supporting kids who are doing good work. We tend to focus on bad things, but a lot of teenagers are doing good things. These kids will make a difference. They‘re our future generation."
