Since Dec. 29, a hardâ€"working gentleman named Angel Cervantes has been on the scene, running his own restaurant known as the Grilled Pepper out of the kitchen formerly operated by the club itself. Cervantes has slowly but surely been bringing in more and more customers who have taken to his wideâ€"ranging menu that includes typical restaurant fare such as pizza and chicken fingers but also a selecâ€" tion of unique international dishes Cervantes keeps his prices low so that students can still afford to eat there, and he‘s aiming to attract some of the apartmentâ€"dwellers who live behind the club. He says the flow of customers has been steadily picking up since midâ€" January as word of the good food, reasonable prices and attention to customer service has spread. The Grilled Pepper at 1289 Marlborough Court is open seven days a week from 11 to 11. (It‘s in the former Monaghan‘s off Trafalgar Road.) Call : 842â€"4435 for Cervantes specializes in Mexican food, with the aforementioned Chimichanga a favourite. It‘s a 12â€" inch flour tortilla filled with shredâ€" ded beef or chicken, cheese, tomato and onion and Jalapeno pepper, folded and deepâ€"fired, and then topped with salsa sauce and sour cream. Cervantes says he loves to work with Mexican spices such as cumin and chili powder, and note that he makes all his own sag such as salsa and teriyaki right@ the premises. He also prepares / own corn chips. Other favourit . are his souvlaki on a bun and his. Zone burger. more information. Cervantes, 29, is a native of Guatemala who came to Canada when he was 10 and has worked in Torontoâ€"area restaurants since he was 15. "I always wanted to own my own restaurant before I was 30, and now I‘ve done it," he says. He and his wife Kim run Business Food Services which owns the Grilled Pepper and a cafeteria in Scarborough. By making a deal with an outâ€" sider, Serrao and Vescio figured they could take care of the kitchenâ€" management situation and also bring in some new faces during the day and evening before the young night crowd poured in. So they put an ad in a Toronto paper in October, had 50 phone calls and a dozen interviews and found Cervantes to be the best candidate. Claudio Serrao, 27, has operated the Zone Run with partner Mick Vescio for three years." We‘re not in the restaurant business, we couldn‘t take proper control of the kitchen, so we thought we‘d bring in someone to run it properly," he explained. The club caters to the student crowd with different theme nights such as Alternative Saturdays and College KAOS on Thursday; the kitchen never served more than a few basics. "It was a challenge coming up with this menu and the name so quickly," he said. "My wife and I put together the whole menu lamiâ€" nated and everything in one weekâ€" end for my interview on the Monday." such as the Chimichanga and the Grilled Pepper‘s unique burritos.
