D 5123 (15% MSRP) (RCCL) was founded in 1969 by three prominent Norwegian shipping companies: L M. Skaugen Company, Gotaas Larsen, and Anders Wilhelmsen Company. In March 1988, RCCL and Admiral Cruises, Inc. merged into a new privately owned holding company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. fleet. In late 1988, Anders CRUISING TIPS Wilhelmsen Company bought out its original partners and gained full ownership of RCCL. Subsequently, Wilhelmsen entered into a joint ownership agreement with an entity of the Pritzker famâ€" ily of Chicago. In the first half of 1992, RCCL sold the two ships in the Admiral Cruises fleet and service was disâ€" continued although RCCL retains the rights to the Admiral Cruises name. Drawing from Norway‘s legâ€" endary seafaring heritage and using modern resort management techniques, RCCL has sustained its reputation for excellence in cruising since the maiden voyage of its first ship, "Song of Norway", on November 7, 1970. "Song of Norway" was one of the first ships built specifically for warm weather cruises. It‘s rakâ€" ishly modern profile includes a cocktail lounge cantilevered from the rear of the smokestack. Known as the Viking Crown Lounge, the room has become the hallmark of every Royal Caribbean ship. (This is the place to be when arriving or departing portsâ€"ofâ€"call for the best views). Since the first ship in 1970, the "Nordic Prince" (1971), "Sun Viking" (1972), "Song of America" (1982), "Sovereign of the Seas" (1988), "Nordic Empress" (1990), "Viking Serenade" (1990), "Monarch of the Seas" (1992), and "Majesty of the Seas" (1992) have entered serâ€" vice. Additionally, RCCL has signed a letter of intent for the construcâ€" tion of up to three new cruise ships; each vessel would be approximately 65,000 gross regisâ€" tered tons with a double occupanâ€" cy of 1,750 passengers. The design of these ships are being developed under the workâ€" ing name of Project Vision. The first ship is expected April 1995, followed by the second vessel in spring 1996 and the third in early 1997. RCCL ships sail many of the most popular itineraries in the world. On a yearâ€"round schedule, sail 3â€"day and 4â€"day cruises on the "Nordic Empress" to the Bahamas. In addition to cruisers looking for a quick getaway, these sailing are excellent for business‘ seeking convention and meeting facilities. The "Sovereign of the Seas" and her two sisters, the "Majesty" and the "Monarch" sail weekly to the east, west and southern Caribbean. As with the "Nordic Empress", these ships always carry a full compliment of guests on every sailing. Book early for the choicer cabins. From Los Angeles, the "Viking Serenade" offers three and fourâ€" day cruises to Baja, Mexico and in the winter, the "Nordic Prince" sail Alaska‘s waters. The "Song of America" sails from New York to Bermuda from May to October. For your next cruise or perhaps your first one, try one of the RCCL ships, you‘ll be returning time and time again!
