"Last year, we won the Halton District Festival and then won the stage manager‘s award and two awards of merit at the Regionals, but we decided not to get involved this year, so we could build internalâ€" ly. We never expected to win." The production that won is called "Ancient Flames," and it uses Biblical and medieval references that pertain to the 12 stations of the cross to address modern issues of belief. Twentyâ€"four students form the cast and crew for this oneâ€"act play which uses all the dramatic modes of characterization, dance, and music. It is written and directed by "Our goal is to give kids experiâ€" ence and opportunities for riskâ€"takâ€" ing and networking outside the classroom," explains Noack. "It‘s not about winninge." students. There will be 12 productions at the Regionals, and of them, three will be chosen to move on to the next step â€" the All Ontario Showcase in Toronto at the end of May. "We will be taking a risk again by expanding the play by 10 minâ€" utes to include more than we showed at Halton," says Noack. "You never know how the adjudicaâ€" tor will look at it. And the kids will learn about pressure and keeping the production alive and fresh. We would be pleased if it goes as well as it did in the district." There are no rules about content, but there is a 50â€"minute time limit for each production at the Regionals. "This whole thing is a tribute to the positive things kids are doing," Noack explains. "This is a valuable part of a student‘s education. It develops selfâ€"esteem and teamwork. I‘m happy to be involved with these students." ROAR backs hazardous waste pilot The River Oaks Association of Residents (ROAR) will be involved in a pilot project involving hazâ€" ardous wastes. At ROAR‘s March meeting, Victor Lesnicki, manager of Waste Reduction for Halton explained the program and its importance to Oakville. The Household Hazardous Waste Special Container Demonstration Program was officially launched on Jan. 3rd., with 100 hazardous waste bins distributed to River Oaks resiâ€" dents who will take part in this proâ€" ject. "We managed to obtain a corpoâ€" rate sponsorship from Laidlaw Environmental for the purchase of 600 bins at a cost of $25,000 to run the demonstration project," says Lesnicki. "The bins are like the blue boxes, but they‘re tamperâ€"proof. People with bins can bring them to the Halton Waste Management Site at 5400 Bronte Rd. to the new regional depot operated by Laidlaw. This is a free service and the purâ€" pose is to avoid having hazardous materials buried in the landfill site. Up to 1% of waste in landfill sites is hazardous." Hazardous wastes can be anyâ€" thing from pesticides to household cleaners, to oil based paints and lead acid batteries. "The purpose of this program is to emphasize home education and identify alternatives that can be used in homes that aren‘t hazardous. We are asking the residents who have the bins to monitor how much hazâ€" ardous waste they are generating. We also hope to expand by finding more corporate sponsors who would (See ‘ROAR ...‘ page 5) Women and Men same price Affordable, professional haircare guaranteed!
