There is no reason whatsoever to shame, punish or reprimand the child. Second, there is a simple, easy and safe treatment, one that works for the large majority of children. The basic problem is that chilâ€" dren don‘t attend to bladder signs when they are asleep. In fact, research suggests that bedâ€"wetters sleep more soundly than other children. To stop bedâ€"wetting, we must teach children to attend (wakeâ€"up) to a full bladder. EFFECTIVE METHOD The single most effective method of stopping bedâ€"wetting involves the use of a "urine alarm" that can either go in the mattress or be worn by the child. They are small, readily available, widely tested, perfectly safe, and have proven in various studies to be effective 75â€"90% of the time. The only prerequisition for treatâ€" ment is that daytime toiletting skills have been mastered. When a child begins to urinate in bed, the wetness closes a circuit that caused a buzzer to sound. The buzzer wakes up the child who goes to the bathroom. Parents should go to the child‘s room to make sure that he gets up and tries to urinate in the toilet, and then washes his hands and face. The bedding is then changed by the child, with help from the parents if necessary, and then the alarm is reset. This is repeated with each bedâ€"time accident. The procedure is in place until the child is dry for 14 consecutive nights. The buzzer is always paired with a full bladder, which gives a child practice in waking up when his bladder gets full. It forces a child to notice and respond to his full bladder. Over time, as the child learns to react to his bladder while asleep, he begins to wake up and go to the bathroom before the alarm goes off. When he does, he wakes up dry in the morning, much to his delight. REASSURANCE Dry nights will be sporadic during the first 2+3 weeks. .Consistent dryness is usually accomplished in 6â€"8 weeks. After bedâ€"wetting seems to be cured, however, about 40% of these chilâ€" dren do have a relapse within six months. While this may concern you, it will shatter the child. Reassure him that it‘s temporary. If this happens you should just use the alarm again, as children become dry much more quickly the second time, and further relapses are quite rare. Finally, one fairly stigmatizing myth should be put to rest. Some people think that bedâ€"wetting is caused by stress or emotional problems. We now know this isn‘t true. Bedâ€"wetting appears to be a cause of emotional problems, rather than being caused by them. When bedâ€"wetting is cured, the "emotional problems" generally disappear.
