"I get a lot of angry calls from people who have been told they can register their children at River Oaks School," said Marklew, who in the past received 26 calls from the Grand Ravine development alone. "They get very angry but it‘s not the board that‘s misleading them." Translation, says board planner Diane Le Breton, is that while parts of River Oaks are served by the school (which includes Kindergarten to Grade 8) the entire community is not. That leaves the Board waging a degree of damage control to avoid the potential fallâ€" out of this confusion. According to Merrick Homes president Saul Merrick, the inforâ€" mation in the booklet was an honâ€" est mistake precipitated when those involved became "so excited" about the Village of Morrison proâ€" ject and the "broader community of River Oaks." "We‘re just asking for some coâ€" operation," said Marklew. "The programs are the same at the schools. The technology is more advanced at River Oaks." According to Le Breton, the board has always posted signs to the entrances of new subdivisions in order to inform people about area schools. Marklew said she has asked for even more signs at sales pavilions. In addition, letters proâ€" moting Lorne Skuce (K to Grade 5) and Montclair (Grades 6 to 8) Public Schools were handâ€"delivâ€" ered to sales offices. One problem: "The boundaries are closed and have been since 1989," said Halton Board Ward 5 trustee Debbie Marklew. Adds Le Breton: "If people call us, we will give them the correct schools," she says. Merrick has since spoken to Board assistant superintendent of Business Services Gord Dixon and cleared the air. He said any and all future literature will be amended to reflect the situation more accurateâ€" ly. Le Breton explained misunderâ€" standings of this kind have hapâ€" pened before, such as the time a builder placed an ad in Toronto Star, but most have been word of mouth mistakes. Marklew said this latest gaff< is the first time According to the company‘s fullâ€"color Media Resource Booklet â€" which devotes a quarter page to extolling the facility‘s virtues â€" "the River Oaks community is served by the internationally renowned River Oaks Public School." Not so, says the Halton Board of Education which has in the past worked hard to spread the right word about boundary lines. It‘s campaign is an uphill battle, though. Just this week the board discovered that the River Oaks Group â€" the major developer of the community which bears its name â€" hasâ€"been promoting its new Village of Morrison east of Sixth Line with literature implying that the children of those who buy there qualify for the celebrated school. While that assertion seems obviâ€" ous, many new homebuyers may have made the erroneous assumpâ€" tion that their children can enroll at the state of the art River Oaks Public School no matter where they plan to live in the area. Development won‘t tap into River Oaks School espite what you‘ve heard to D the contrary, the River Oaks community is served by more than just a single school.
