Van Slingerland plans to repeat a part of last year‘s program by inviting speakers from the police, fire departâ€" ment and library to visit the camp. This year there will be a fee for the program to defray the cost of field trips. The camp will cost $30 per week, $100 per month or $200 for the entire 8â€"week program. GAP will run from July 4th to Aug. 26th at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. "There is no way you can find a program for summer activities for such low cost," said Van Slingerland who expects 100 Glen Abbey youth to register for the program. Van Slingerland is a theology stuâ€" dent at the Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Peterborough, majoring in Missions and Youth Ministry. Following the GAP summer program, in October he will start a threeâ€"month internship in Nicaragua, planning churches, working with youth and teaching at a Bibleâ€"college. "We would like to go to more places this year like Wild Water Kingdom and Canada‘s Wonderland," said Van Slingerland. He also hopes to organize a weekâ€" end camp, with the help of parent volâ€" unteers, for GAP "regulars". Van Slingerland will get help at this year‘s GAP program from assisâ€" tant, Catherine Smith. He is also relyâ€" ing on input from the Glen Abbey Residents Association and volunteers. GAP for youth‘s second summer Mike Van Slingerland has plans for Glen Abbey youth this summer. Van Slingerland, director of the Glen Abbey Primeâ€"time (GAP) program, is developing a program to keep his young charges busy during July and August. GAP, now in its second year, is an active allâ€"day camp geared to 10â€" to 14â€"year old boys and girls. It is supervised by the Glen Abbey Community Church and funded with the help of a grant from Employment and Immigration Canada through its Summer Employment Experience Development (SEED) program. Van Slingerland promises this summer‘s camp will be bigger and better than ever. He will be offering basketball, baseball, floor hockey and swimming, as well as crafts and dayâ€" trips.
