(Continued from page 6) Dan says that the "song hook" is an integral part of their songwriting. "I like choruses that stay in your head. We‘re into melody a lot. Instead of coasting around like some other bands out there, we want people to be able to identify with the music and sing along." All of the great bands of the past, he insists, have songs which stand out from the rest. That is his intent, to craft signature tunes which instantly identify The Warhols from any other group. "I sing most of the songs, but we don‘t consider singing the most important part. The music is 10 times more important than the lyrics." "Our goal is to make things stick in your head so that you cannot escape them." Demonstrative of this are the layâ€" erings of guitar on ‘I Don‘t Care,‘ an ode to individualism, and ‘Lonely Man,‘ a sombre song about the classic situation of solitude which constitutes much of rock era songwriting. Dan‘s the "low" voice, while Adam‘s is the "high." Their situation is curious considering that nine musiâ€" cal groups out of 10 feature a promiâ€" nent lead singer who handles most of the vocal work. "If I write a song which I would really like to sing, I would fight for the part," Adam says. "But in this group, whether you‘re singing or not, you‘d be playing some kind of instruâ€" ment. That balances the amount of work." Dan confesses that The Warhols do not pay much attention to vocal prowess. Fans who have attended The Warhols‘ concerts find it surprising that they are actually only a threeâ€" piece band. Onstage, they proclaim with pride, they are never in need of extra instruâ€" mental help. According to Dan, their live sound does not miss anything due to the lack of studio technology. Aside from the student body at White Oaks, one party which has expressed interest in the is Canadian film director Bruce McDonald, who helmed ‘Roadkill‘ and ‘Highway 61.‘ So far, the band has sent tapes to major record labels including EMI, Virgin and Capitol. "He‘s talked about involving us in some of his projects but we haven‘t really done anything with him yet," says Dan. Circulating the demos locally is a substantial step towards that goal. Following the classic formula of a successful band, The Warhols aim to become a familiar local act with a hard core fanbase before they extend their ambitions. "We want to be heard, to get a foot in the door. We would like to go into as many markets as possible, on a national basis or perhaps the United States." Right now, the three musicians have about five songs in reserve â€" songs on par with the four tracks on the demo, in terms of quality. In the current rockâ€"music scene, the concept of an underground band "selling out" is a common concern for fans. Bands from Metallica to Pearl Jam have been accused of becoming "too popular" and that their music is compromised in the process of becoming highâ€"profile acts. "We won‘t be affected by success because we write what we feel," says Rich. Dan does not believe that "selling out" is a negative. "Let‘s face it, it‘s a business. The bands really can‘t be blamed for selling albums because it‘s the fans who buy the material. The real concern is whether the bands change their musical styles â€" just to appeal to the masses. "We won‘t change our music just because the people at EMI or Virgin don‘t like it," emphasized Dan. "All we can do is keep up with the music. This is what we want to do. I don‘t want to look back years from now and regret that I never went through and tried this." oMBaNY. A DIFEERENT KIND oF CAR.
