Smith proposed it could be used to hire someone partâ€"time to help with Summerfest, for community projects or for charity. Several directors supported ploughing the money back into the community rather than giving it to charity. She is seeking ideas from the board and the Special Events commitâ€" tee on ways to use the money generatâ€" ed by Summerfest which she prefers to consider as a reserve. Smith stressed that the success of Summerfest was dependent on good weather and was concerned that although this was a bumper year, the association could lose a lot of money any year there is bad weather. The introduction of a Ferris Wheel helped increase ticket sales this year, and although there was good weather throughout most of the weekend, GARA lost some revenue on the Saturday night when rain forced the shut down of rides. Residents turned out in droves for the threeâ€"day festival which is now established as a Glen Abbey tradition. "This year we had tremendous support from sponsors," Gail Smith, Special Events chair, said at GARA‘s monthly meeting Monday night. The tenth anniversary Summerfest proved to be the best ever. The annual event sponsored by the Glen Abbey Residents Association (GARA) every August pulled in a "reserve" of $6,457 this year, its biggest to date. The board elected Terry Schill to fill the treasurer‘s position which has been vacant for several months. GARA, whose present membership stands at 1,400, still has one vacancy on its board. The association will be also replacing two plaques which were removed by vandals from benches in Abbey Lane Park. GARA places plaques inscribed with the names of the Association‘s past presidents on benches it donates to the community. To date it has donated eight benches. ed in the northâ€"east parking lot of the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, is already a popular spot with area youth.
