This year, $9.5 million has been awarded to cancer researchers in Canadian hospitals and universities. Last year, $8.5 in research grants were awarded. Last year, the Terry Fox Run and school events combined to raise $63,427 from 3,652 participants â€" 572 at the run site raising $29,440, and 2,080 students at 11 schools brought in $33,987, said run coâ€" ordinator Ralph Robinson. The Terry Fox Run has become an annual event following the death, from cancer, of the celebrated oneâ€" legged runner who began his crossâ€" Canada Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980, in St. John‘s, Nfld. For 143 days, he ran 42 kilometres, or 26 miles, every day, and was forced to stop on Sept. 1, 1980 near Thunder Bay, approximately the halfâ€"way point of his run, having completed 5,565 kilometres. The cancer which took his right leg had spread into his lungs. Fox died on June 28, 1981. His Marathon of Hope raised $24.17 million for canâ€" cer research. That year, the first Terry Fox Run was held in local communities, including Oakville, and $2.6 million was raised. Over the next 13 years, the Terry Fox Run raised $135 million worldâ€" wide, as the annual event has spread to over 3,000 sites across Canada, and has grown to 251 international runs in 35 countries, raising $1.3 million last year. Over $8.5 million was raised worldwide in 1993. Ontario raised $3.6 million last year, despite tough economic times.
