Our Lady of Peace is a replica of Our Lady of the Smile with the addition of the dove to fit in with the school‘s logo and commitment to peace. The statue, worth upwards of $5,000 and paid for through the generosity of many donors, features a childlike looking Blessed Virgin holding Baby Jesus in one hand and a dove in the other. Our Lady of Peace, a fourâ€"foot high fibreglass sculpture crafted in Italy, was unveiled and blessed recently in a special ceremony at Our Lady of Peace School on River Glen Boulevard. She‘s beautiful and in great shape despite a gruelling travel schedule...via a wooden crate across the Atlantic Ocean. Our Lady of Peace statue After more than 20 years of comâ€" munity involvement â€" 14 of those in elected office â€" Behrens‘ resume reads like a phone book of local, regional and provincial boards, charities and committees. Some highlights include the establishing of two local Block Parent Programs, canvassing for the United Way, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Cancer Society plus membership in "You at some point need to know what you‘re doing is what the elecâ€" torate wants you to do," said the married mother of two. Behrens‘ only challenger to date is River Oaks resident Jim Richards. The only drawback, she says, is not getting out doorâ€"toâ€"door to find out what‘s on people‘s minds. Acclamation is easier financially, but Behrens believes only a camâ€" paign can provide a clear mandate for an elected official. "You could look at it two ways, a vote of confidence or apathy," said Behrens. "I prefer to look at it posiâ€" tively, that the electorate is happy with what I‘ve been doing." Behrens served as a local counâ€" cillor in the old Ward 3 from 1980 to 1985 then was elected to Regional Council. In 1988, howevâ€" er, she was acclaimed to that post as she was three years later in the newly created Ward 5. This fall‘s municipal election will be something of a novelty for Liz Behrens: for the first time since 1985 the incumbent Ward 5 regionâ€" al councillor will have to mount a campaign. the Halton Safety Council, College Park Residents Association and Sunningdale Public School Parentâ€" Teacher Organization. Locally she has served on a variety of boards and committees Locally she has served on a variety of boards and committees ranging from Oakville Museum, Oakville Centre and Oakville Galleries to the United Way, Uptown Core (as chair) and Oakville Community Homes Inc. Regionally, Behrens has served on everything from the Audit Subâ€" Committee to the Court of Revision to being vice chair of the Administration and Finance Committee. She has also served in a variety of capacities with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). In August she was acclaimed as a viceâ€"president of AMO‘s Executive Committee and Board. Having accomplished all that, why run for yet another term? Behrens believes she still has much "There are some outstanding issues I have been involved with from the beginning and I want to see them through," she said. to contribute, especially when it comes to such unfinished business as the zoning of the Uptown Core and River Oaks.
