Tall ship sailing holiday was something special ast week Heather and I had the great pleasure of experiencing our ï¬rst ‘Tall Sailing ship’ cruise on Windstar Cruises’ ship the “Wind Star!†'Ihe “Wmd Stat†is 440 feet in length, weighs 5,300 tons, has four masts that tower 204 feet above the water and has an diesel electric propulsion system that supplements the sails to insure that the weekly sailing schedules are met. During our 84 hours of traveling on the seas, the sails were ‘up’ 79 hours (they even had a contest amongst the guests to estimate how many hours we would be under sail). The 73 deluxe outside cabins are all the same size, beautifully decorated and totally functional (there is one large owner’s suite). All cabins have two generous ponholes that lets the light stream in. Each cabin has a direct-dial ship-to-shore telephone, VCR, CD player, multiâ€"channel radio, color TV, minibar, refrigerator, safe, hair dryer and 24â€" hour room service - all the comforts of home! The ship’s library houses an extensive CD and Video collection for your use in your cabin and a reason- able book library. In addition to the library facilities, this ship boasts a sauna, ï¬tness room, outdoor swimming pool with pool bar, a casino (blackjack, Caribbean stud poker and slots), signature shop (shopping), hair stylist, masseuse and an entertainment lounge. The ship does not have elevators. r While we expec'ted a quality food program on this ship, it exceeded our expectations!‘ Breakfast and lunch were served on deck or in ‘The Verandah’, a beautiful glass enclosed setting, high on the ship: A A _ An extensive ‘24 Hour Room Service’ menu was also available including the ability to order anything from the lunch and dimer menus during those dining hours in your cabin. Breakfast in bed, watching a ï¬rst run movie, was a treat! ‘ The “Wmd Star†and her two sister ships, the “Mud Song†and “Wind Spirit†have a built-in sports platform that drops down at the rear of the ship when we are anchored off shore for our daily stop (we did not ‘dock’ in any of the ports, but were tendered into the main port of each island stop). As you could see from our itinerary, we 'v1s1ted much smalleriports not visited by the large cruise ships and had an opportunity to tour uncrowded islands and take 1n local sights. Next week I’ll complete my report on our ‘Tall Ship’ cruise covering daily activities, entertainment and other exciting itineraries offered by Windstar Cruises.
