DARE holds cruise raffle to raise funds The program costs $200,000 a year and is partially funded by the school boards. This budget provides for four police officers, each trained in the United States, to teach the proâ€" gram in Halton. Halton and Peel are the only Canadian centres for DARE comâ€" Most schools get the program every other year, and he added, its an administrative decision by the board who gets it. "The goal is that every Grade 6 student gets the DARE program," Carnovale told directors of the Glen Abbey Residents Association (GARA) recently. "(To do this,) the budget has to be doubled." "We are missing half the students in the public board and a third in the separate board," said Carnovale. The Drug Awareness and Resistance Education (DARE) proâ€" gram in the Halton schools has been "too successful" says Ralph Carnovale, viceâ€"chair of DARE‘s fundraising committee. To help meet the demand for the program, the fundraising committee has launched a raffle for a Caribbean cruise to raise funds for DARE. â€" Although 7,000 students have been through the DARE program since it started four years ago in Halton, there are still many schools who do not regâ€" ularly get the program. There have been some changes to the program on subâ€" stance abuse and cigarettes and alcoâ€" hol are now included. When asked if people other than police officers could be trained to deliver the program, Carnovale replied they found "the best response came by using police officers." SUGGESTED RETAIL $499 The fundraising committee has started a drive to raise additional funds for the program. It is selling 5,000 tickets for a draw on Feb. 14th, 1995. The prize â€" a sevenâ€"day Caribbean cruise for two on the S.S. Norway provided by Cruise Holidays. Tickets costs $5 for a chance at this $2,500 prize. On Dec. 28th, DARE will be sellâ€" ing tickets for the cruise at GARA‘s "Community Day" at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. pared to 22,000 centres in the United States.
