Proposal calls for low-cost activities in addition to fireworks NEWS l Continued from page 4 mittee voted to provide the BIA with a $15,000 event grant, $25,000 worth of sup port and $1,500 worth of fee waivers. Sargent noted this was not sufficient. "The Bronte BIA main tains that the size and scope of Oakville's Canada Day project with its in creasing and variable costs has grown beyond our re sources and financial ca pabilities," Sargent said- during the Dec. 18 council meeting. "Upon review of declin ing commercial assess ments within the Bronte BIA budget and levy, cou pled with insufficient fi nancial support from out side funding partners, the Bronte BIA cannot present Oakville's Canada Day. We thank the town for its past support and regret that we've had to come to this decision under the current fiscal environment." In a report to the admin istrative services commit tee, town staff noted that with the withdrawal of the Bronte BIA they have been asked to examine the po tential of delivering a mod ified evening event, focus ing on fireworks at the Bronte Heritage Water front Park. While no significant en tertainment, aside from the fireworks, would be provided, staff recom mends a variety of small- scale, low-cost activities for the event. These activities could include: • Musical and cultural performances by various community groups at the Pavilion in Bronte Heri tage Waterfront Park. • A selection of food trucks and vendors on-site. • Passive-play games, materials and equipment (for example, outdoor board games, Frisbees, sidewalk chalk, etc.). • Roaming performers (such as buskers, dancers, magicians). • Community informa tion and outreach booths. In previous years the celebration has featured an all-day family festival including musical perfor mances on multiple stages, a vendor village and fire works to cap off the eve ning. Of the $90,200 requested by town staff for the event, $13,000 would be spent on event support, $7,500 would be spent on adver tising, $34,200 would be spent on logistics (road clo sures, Transit, permits, equipment, fire safety, etc.) and $35,500 spent on fireworks. Town staff said this bud get assumes the absence of sponsorships or revenues connected with the event.fas W IN D O W S & DOORS SHUTTERS & BLINDS Since 1999 E C L I P S E ' S H U T T E R S byshadeOmatic i f f * vi ny l b i l t I L T B E T T E R fasada.ca 905.827.3331 ON SALE NOW B R O N T E & D U N D A S .
