The Montana‘s grand opening, Dec. 2nd, marked a totally new venâ€" ture for Kelsey‘s, which recently embarked on an aggressive expansion plan that will see a total of 65 new restaurants added over the next three years. Kelsey‘s, which recorded sales of $43.3 million in the first 10 months of 1993, currently operates 38 liquorâ€" licensed restaurants across Canada. While Kelsey‘s has based its sucâ€" cess on its fullâ€"service restaurants, Montana‘s will emphasize an upâ€"scale fastâ€"food setting. Freshly prepared salâ€" ads and flameâ€"roasted chicken will be the main staples for Montana‘s cusâ€" tomers who will be able to eat in or take out. The new restaurant chain won‘t have table service, however, unlike Kelsey‘s. The marketing of the Montana‘s concept is based on healthy lifestyles â€" everything from the name to the product was selected with that in mind, said Jeffrey. > "It‘s like mom‘s Sunday night home cooking. It‘s all healthy food and we‘re really value priced. It‘s a bigger chicken than Swiss Chalet for less money," he said. Jeffrey said the time was ripe for the new concept to take flight because of current economic conditions. Those include reduced construction and real estate costs as well as a surplus of unemployed middleâ€"managers wantâ€" to start their own businesses. "We‘ve worked so hard in the last couple of years so we can take advanâ€" tage of the recession," he said. One way the company is doing just that is by refurbishing its existing Kelsey‘s locations, reducing their Jeffrey said the company wants to have eight new restaurants â€" four Kelsey‘s and four Montana‘s up and running by next summer. Sites in Hamilton, London, Burlington and Mississauga have been earmarked for expansion. Jeffrey believes the new concept will have potential franchisees flockâ€" ing to the corporation‘s front door. "(The restaurants) are designed around the owner being able to operâ€" ate the concept and afford the concept. We don‘t take 15% or 16% from the franchisee like some restaurant comâ€" panies. We take about 5%," he said. And the expansion is sure to have some economic spinâ€"offs for those communities where the new restauâ€" rants will be located. "We‘ll create around 1,000 jobs with our expansion," he said. Watersaver There‘s a place that‘s out to get you from flushing your money down the toiâ€" let along with the water. The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology Human Rights is bent on installing "toilet watersaver tanks dams" in every residential and commerâ€" cial toilet in Oakville. Its spokesperson, Eric Jensen, says Oakville residents can conserve water and money at the same time. _ The average toilet uses 22 litres of water every time it‘s flushed, he said, and the watersaver saves about 10 litres. ‘"In a household of four persons each flushing four times a day, you will save close to 40 cents a week or $19.60 a year. At $15 each, the Centre has some 400 of the units left after selling "quite a few."
