Also vital was a $250,000 bequest, made by Margery Ilene McDowell. Her gift made it possible for the direcâ€" tors and staff to begin planning for the new building. 3 Great Sofa/Loveseat Styles Funding is still critical, and Halton Women‘s Place will maintain a fundraising campaign to pay off the shelter and help cover operating costs. Donations and household items are always needed. Up to 20 mothers and their children will be able to stay at the new shelter for up to six weeks. The new Burlington shelter will likely house about 450 women and children a year. The new building combines securiâ€" ty with durable and comfortable furâ€" nishings â€" the exact location isn‘t being widely publicized, for security reasons. Project coordinator Mickie Daniel said Halton Women‘s Place South is bright and cheerful for women and children who have arrived in a state of shock and fear, anger, and desperation. "They need to be comforted, counâ€" selled, and given some assurance that they and their children will be protectâ€" ed while they consider their options." The building features Leslie‘s Room â€" a playroom and study area for adolescents. It‘s named in memory of slain teenager Leslie Mahaffy, with furniture provided by the Burlington Jaycees. A 1990 study showed thousands of Halton women are abused, and 80% live in Burlington and Oakville where the Milton shelter can‘t be reached by public transit. "The opening of the new Shelter is very exciting, of course, but we have to remember that this is the beginning, no an end," said Greer. "There is still much work to be done to eradicate vioâ€" lence against women and children in our society. But this is a truly wonderâ€" ful beginning. Taekwondo club pitches in for Baby Erik Members of Ooi‘s Taekwondo in Mississauga are trying to raise awareâ€" ness about the plight of yearâ€"old Erik Lo, who needs a bone marrow transâ€" plant, by holding two taekwondo demonstrations. Erik‘s parents, Walter and Kimberly, belong to the club and lived in Mississauga for many years before moving to Oakville. Their son has AML, a rare form of leukemia. He has undergone many blood transfusions and chemotherapy treatments in his short life. Diagnosed with the disease at 9 months of age, he‘s on the Red Cross list as needing a bone marrow donor. The demonstrations will take place, Sat., Feb. 5th, from 1 to 2:15 p.m., at Ooi‘s Taekwondo, 755 The Queensway E., Unit 3, at Cawthra Rd. Call 276â€" 5640 for information. "Walter and Kimberly have been training with me for over seven years," said owner and taekwondo instructor Hong Ooi. "It‘s sad for this to happen to them." Doctors are going to extract Lo‘s own bone marrow, after extensive chemotherapy. He will be given further chemotherapy treatments, then his own bone marrow will be reâ€"infused, said his mother Kimberly, who works in Mississauga. "There isn‘t a match, and they‘re not going to wait," she added. ‘"It‘s been really difficult. It‘s unbelievable. We‘ve been in and out of hospital for over three months."
