BETWEEN THE LINES "SPORTS Ripped off ‘n Fightin‘ Mad Now this is a series of hard fought play off hockey! after each team won on their home ice in games one and two, game three in Hamilton on Tuesday was something to behold. The Blades came away on the short end of a 3â€"2 overtime loss which left many of the Oakville fans in attendance shaking their heads in disbelief. Inexplicably, those fans watched as they say the potential overtime winner cross the goal line only to be denied by the officials. According to them a few people had to be asleep to miss it. Regardless _ of _ the disappointing finish, the fact Top Scorers Playoff Scoring 7 #23 Gord Kalverdia #22 Kent Willams #12 Jason Slaney #19 Mike Roberts #20 Mait Interbartolo remains that game three was one heck of a match. With the exception of some serious lapses in discipline by both teams, the game was fast, intense and very well played. Most people were on the edge of their seats all night. The goaltending at both ends of the rink was stellar making the game even more dramatic. Now that‘s hockey and there‘s more to come this weekend! And you can count on tit as this edition of the Blades has shown many times their ability to bounce back with big efforts. This time they‘re fightin‘ mad! Blades look to even series Given a second life, the Kilty Bees promptly fired in their own undisputâ€" ed goal to give them the game 3â€"2 and the lead in the series at 2â€"1. Walker doesn‘t foresee any problems with his troops rebounding from Tuesday‘s heartbreaking loss. "We lost in overtime. It‘s no insurmountable lead. Someone had to come out leading 2â€"1." Oakville‘s tripleâ€"A midget hockey team is headed to Ottawa next month to compete in the sixâ€" team, Air Canada Ontario regionâ€" al championships. An exciting 4â€"3, comeâ€"fromâ€" behind, overtime victory in Oshawa Tuesday night gave the Oakville Maple Leaf Foods Rangers a jubiâ€" lant midnight bus ride back home, not to mention the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) bestâ€" ofâ€"five championship series in three straight games. Oakville coach Al Majander, however, is confident his team will give a good account of themselves in its first trip to the Ontario midget championships. Pressed to single out a key ingreâ€" dient, Majander said "probably our captain (Ryan Smith)." Oakville‘s biggest foe might well be time. The Air Canada regional championship runs from April 6â€"10, and the team will have to try and retain its competitive edge through practices, exhibition games and, hopefully, some tournament action. If it had been put to a popular vote, the Oakville Blades just might have been awarded the gameâ€"clinching, overtime goal they thought they had scored Tuesday night in the third game of their Provincial Junior A bestâ€"ofâ€" seven championship series against Hamilton. But the only two people in Hamilton‘s Mountain Arena whose opinions counted, remarked Oakville Blades General Manager Murray Walker, were the goal judge and referee. And they both ruled no goal. The fifth game will be held Saturday, 1:45 p.m., at Hamilton‘s Mountain Arena, while a sixth game, if necessary, would be held back at Oakville Arena on Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Richard Raymond and Matt Interbartolo supplied the goals while assists went to Jason Slaney (2) and Kent Williams. When the team is down, the secâ€" ondâ€"year veteran is the type of playâ€" er that "can go on the ice and pick things up." Oakville will try and even things up tonight at Oakville Arena, with the usual 8 p.m. start. The registration will begin at 3 p.m. and be followed by a social evening. This year, the club will follow the trend set by several area clubs and try to put together a ladies team. "A lot depends on how many (women) sign up," said club president Frank O‘Meara. On the men‘s side, the club, which is located at 2214 Ninth Line, fields four senior teams ranging in calibre all the way up to interâ€"city competiâ€" tive. It also fields an underâ€"17 and an underâ€"19 team. Social memberships are also available. For information, call Mr. O‘Meara at 273â€"6317 or Alf Connell at 632â€"4794. The Crusaders Rugby Club is gearing up for another year and has penâ€" ciled in Saturday (March 19) for its annual registration.
