A social worker, she‘s had to rely on an interpreter from the Canadian Hearing Society whenever she had to deal with deaf clients prior to her arrival at the Halton Rape Crisis Centre. That, effectively, placed a third perâ€" son in the room when dealing with conâ€" fidential matters. And, "it makes it diffiâ€" cult to establish eye contact, as both myself and the client must always be looking at the interpreter." Now with the Halton Rape Crisis Centre, a agency which is receiving a number of requests for counselling and assistance from women in the deaf comâ€" munity who have experienced sexual assault, Potter is about to realize her dream. The agency, aware of Potter‘s aspirations to communicate directly with the deaf, obtained funding for her training from the Oakville Zonta Club. Zonta has recently given Potter $680 to begin taking the twoâ€"level American Sign Language course from the Canadian Hearing Society starting this spring. Should she be able to take the three parts of Level 1 and the twoâ€"part Level 2 programs uninterrupted, Potter will be a fully trained deaf communicaâ€" tor in about 1 1/2 years. Zonta is preâ€" pared to provide more money as needed, said its president Margo van der Hart. "I expect to be working with deaf women, and I would like to be able to communicate with them by myself," said Potter, currently the agency‘s volâ€" unteer coâ€"ordinator. "I‘m excited about taking the course from the Canadian Hearing Society, because for me it will be total immerâ€" sion into the deaf culture, and this appeals to me," said Potter. At this point, she is not sure whether she will be taking her courses in Mississauga or Hamilton. "Since starting here (with the Halton Rape Crisis Centre) I‘ve been learning about the abuses within the deaf culture, and most agencies are not available to them on a 24â€"hour basis (because of the communication difficulty). "I see an increasing need for services which the deaf culture can access, and the Halton Rape Crisis Centre is workâ€" ing to become accessible to as many cultures as possible, including the deaf culture. The deaf culture needs to be represented." Always interesting in communicatâ€" ing with the deaf community, Potter taught herself finger spelling from a card she received during childhood from Girl Guides, "something I‘ve always kept." Potter had this card enlarged and hung on the wall when she worked as a lifeguard at a hotel where one of the dishwashers was hearing impaired. "People were simply unable to comâ€" municate with him; they always spoke too loudly," she recalled, adding he would reply ‘I can read your lips, there‘s no need to shout.‘ "It was at that time that I felt a drasâ€" tic need for me to Jearn how to commuâ€" nicate with the deaf," she said, adding her grandmother was deaf. She had, because of her knowledge of finger spelling, worked with deaf children while working for the Ontario Ministry of Education. Potter has also worked as a residential supervisor at a group home for the mentally handiâ€" capped, and as a residential counsellor with Halton Adolescent Support Services before coming to the Halton Rape Crisis Centre about a year ago. \ o _ <;‘pcenters Feb. 2, 19 backs initiative % Shirlea Potter of the Halton Rape Crisis Centre signs ‘Thank You‘ Margo van der Hart, president of the Oakville Zonta Club, for h organization‘s funding to take American Sign Language courses.
