Real Estate: The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1994 â€" 4 most popular home improvement DIY (Do It Yourself) project. Considering the satisfaction that it brings, the investâ€" ment of time and labor is negligible when compared to the cost and time involved with wallpapering. Wallpaper certainly produces more elegant results (discounting one‘s first efforts, of course). But the stress on a marriage when a couple decides to make it a coâ€"operative effort can be awesome. Painting the walls is a much safer proâ€" ject because it demandsless skill and patience, but even here there are certain basics that should be understood. CHOOSING PAINT Unlike most consumer products, the quality of paint is closely related to the price. Topâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"line paints are easier to apply, cover better (usually one coat) and last longer. The apparent saving in using a cheapâ€" Interior painting is far and away the er paint is lost if extra coats and more freâ€" quent repainting are required â€" unless your time is worth nothing. High gloss paints last longer and are more moisture resistant. (Parents of small children take note!) Flat paints are the least durable and in the darker colors are susceptible to marking. The marks take the form of shiny spots even when lightly rubbed. Flat paint provides a far more luxuriâ€" ous finish but you have to consider the effect of traffic before opting for a flat finish. Latex is water soluble (that means easy cleanâ€"up) free of odour and harmful fumes, and has a very short drying time. In fact, the drying time is so short that when you are paintâ€" ing a large area like a wall you will find overlapped areas can present a problem. As you work from top to bottom on the wall and then move over to an unpainted area the painted area can already be dry, especially in the winter when inside air is so dry. When you paint over that dry area there is a possibility you will have a two coat effect in just that area. If it is very noticeable you may have to give the whole wall a second coat. To avoid the problem, work in smaller strips so you can get back to the painted area before it dries out. Alkyd paint is made of synthetic resins and requires varsol (mineral spirâ€" its) for cleanâ€"up. There is not a lot of odour but the fumes are toxic and flamâ€" mable. It is slower drying than latex and more durable. Oilâ€"base is formulated from oils and has a strong odor, but you can buy addiâ€" ANELL FRANCIS REAL ESTATE 88 UNN ET the best”‘ Your Oakuille S Serving O; Sinoe 1975 COMFY AND COZY Relax by lhe warmlh of the famlmom fireplace. APPLICATION There is a quite a choice: brush, roller, spray, pad and, for special effects, a sponge. Brushes have bristles made of animal hair or synthetic fibres, usually nylon or polyester. Bristle brushes are more expensive (very much so in the case of artist‘s brushes) and are best for oilâ€"base and alkyd paints. You will have problems using hair bristle for latex because latex is too thick to get up into the bristles and you cannot get a good load on a brush. Synthetic bristles are slippery and usually less densely packed into the ferrule of the brush so you can load latex into it better. Paint brushes hardly ever wear out so invest in a good one and clean it (Continued on next page) THE PERFECT BUY! B $267,000. S~â€".~ing white dominates this 4â€"bdrm. Glen home.
