It is important that you know how your floors were finished so that you can ensure your cleaning regimen is appropriâ€" ate. Your builder, realtor, or flooring speâ€" cialist should be able to tell you what kind of finish you have. It would also be helpful to know the brand names of the stain and other finishâ€" ing products used for your hardwood flooring. If your floors were preâ€"finished at the flooring manufacturing plant, note the name of the manufacturer. Keep that information in your household data file to help you determine the proper floor care products. WAX FINISH Follow the basic preventative mainteâ€" nance tips: * When the floor looks dull, buff first to see if that will restore the lustre before rewaxing. * When areas of heavy use no longer respond to buffing, wax only those areas and buff the whole floor to an even lustre. * When the whole floor needs special attention, clean and wax with a single product and buff. Purchase a liquid wax and cleaner specifically made for wood floors. If your wood is dark stained, select the type that also contains stain. Cans which say "Contains Petroleum Distillate" or "Naptha" are good for wood floors. Follow instructions on the label, being certain to apply evenly. Wipe up the excess as you go. Let dry. Buff to your desired lustre. Depending upon trafâ€" fic, the floor should only need to be comâ€" pletely rewaxed once or twice a year. * If you still can‘t get your hardwood floor to shine, you can work with a prodâ€" uct called "renovator" or with paint thinâ€" ner. Keep in mind, these products are flammable. Work fine steel wool in a puddle of the cleaner and wipe clean as you go. After the floor is dry, apply paste wax, either liquid or solid. When using solid paste wax, wrap a "wad" of wax in a cloth and apply a thin even coat. The warmth of your hand and the rubbing fricâ€" tion melts the wax thoroughly. Buff to your desired lustre. SURFACE FINISH * Surface finishes include polyurethane and Swedish finishes. * Follow the basic preventative mainteâ€" nance tips. * When lustre doesn‘t return in high traffic areas such as doorways, the kitchen, or hallways, the floor may require recoating. Consult with your wood floor specialist. * Never wax a surface finish. WHITE AND BLEACHED FLOORS * Because of their light colour, these floors, like white carpet and vinyl, are more susceptible to showing the effects of dirt and traffic. Vacuum and sweep them often. Wipe off liquid spills immediately. Follow the basic preventative mainteâ€" nance tips. * During dry seasons or long heating periods, you may notice tiny separations between the flooring strips. The amount of moisture in the air causes wood to expand or contract. When humidity levels are low, the flooring will contract and the separations will become more prominent. This is a natural characteristic of wood. * Depending on the type of finish used, lightâ€"tinted hardwood floors may have some shadmg changes over time. .....
