On Oct. 24th Erik was diagnosed as having acute myelogenous leukemia, a rare form of blood cancer for which a bone marrow transplant will drasâ€" tically improve his chances for recovery. Siblings make the best match (in this case there are none) although gone surgery and chemotherapy treatments. A parental match occurs once in every 750,000, underscoring the importance of getting as many people as possible to register. (Since Walter is Asian and Kimberley Caucasian, a match was that much more difficult.) With a transplant complete, Erik‘s chances for recovery jump from 30% with chemotherapy alone to about 70%. only in 25% of cases.
