Taking a big dive It may be Ivy League, but Princeton has been a real dive for White Oaks Secondary School graduate Sheryl Summerton. The 20â€"yearâ€"old Oakville resiâ€" dent last month helped Princeton knock out Harvard and nine other challengers to retain the champiâ€" onship of the Eastern Women‘s | Swimming League. Summerton, who excelled with the Etobicoke Diving Club, swept both the 1â€"metre (where she set a Princeton record) and 3â€"metre competitions (where she set the pool record). She then easily earned a berth in the recent NCAA‘s where, not having her best day, she finished 21 out of the 37 divers. On a partial scholarship at Princeton where she intends to major in psychology, the elite athlete is rounding out her season by competing at the Canadian national diving championships in Quebec City this week. INFORMATION CALL " 8453024 _ Blades force 7th game Last night was the Oakville Blades‘ absolute last chance to do something they had not accomâ€" plished all year. Defeat the Kilty Bees in Hamilton (the game went beyond the Beaver‘s Tuesday night deadâ€" line). "It‘s a seventh game â€" our kids are up for it," Oakville Blades genâ€" eral manager Murray Walker comâ€" mented before the game. To last night‘s victor went the Provincial Junior A west division title and the right to meet Orillia (which disposed of Newmarket 4â€"1 for the east division title) for the league championship. Orillia probably didn‘t care about the outcome all that much since they get home ice advantage either way, and is tentatively schedâ€" uled to host the first league champiâ€" onship game tomorrow night. The Blades forced last night‘s seventh and deciding game on the strength of Sunday‘s incredible, heartâ€"stopping, doubleâ€"overtime, 5â€" 4 victory. "I needed oxygen between the periods," quipped Walker, who noted that the "intensity level is quite high." "It was exciting. Certainly the fans got their money‘s worth." For Oakville fans to see more hockey this spring, however, he conceded the players will have to buck a trend in which Oakville has yet to win in Hamilton, not just in this series (where the Blades have also won all their home games) but for the entire year. The two other weekend games produced the same 6â€"4 scores with Oakville on the losing end in Hamilton on Saturday and on the winning end at home on Friday. Walker was especially pleased with Sunday‘s doâ€"orâ€"die win in that the Blades â€" playing their third game in three nights â€" "went in down a couple of players." Sidelined _ were _ Richard Raymond, a "premier defenceman", and Jason Slaney, "one of our top scorers." Another key player, â€" Gord Kalverda, was dogged by bruised ribs even though there was absolutely nothâ€" ing wrong his heart, sai Walker. Especially in Sunday‘s game, he said Kalverda showed a lot of "guts and determination." "It‘s that kind of grit that makes for a real team member." Also putting in a good showing on both Saturday and Sunday, he said, was Brent Strike, who along with Brian Bendig, was called up from Oakville‘s Triple AAA OMHA midget championship team which is anxiously awaiting the Air Canada Ontario. regional champiâ€" Gord Kalverda MINOR ATOM "AAA" Oakville‘s Mississauga Tire Rangers opened their bestâ€"ofâ€"five Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) champiâ€" onship series against Markham on Sunday with a tough 3â€"2 overtime loss. Oakville, which won a semiâ€"final playâ€" down to advance out of the central and western zones, will try to even up the series tonight at Markham‘s Clatworthy Arena. The third game will be back in Oakville Friday, 7 p.m., at Maple Grove Arena. Oakville took a 2â€"1 lead into the third period on goals by Bryan McLoughlin and Keith Zavitz (Zavitz had an assist on McLoughlin‘s goal). Goalie Dane Gilbert stopped 27 of 30 shots fired at him in the fourâ€"period match. Oakville could only manage two goals on 29 shots. The two teams are more evenly matched than expected. The highly touted Markham squad had disposed of twoâ€"time Ontario champion St. Catharines 3â€"1 in their semiâ€"final 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport * 4.0 L 190 hp Engine * 4 Speed Automatic Transmission * Commandâ€"Trac 4WD * Air Conditioning $21,973: Mirrors * 1.5 L Fuel Injected Engine * 5 Speed Manual Transmission SEE YOUR LOCAL JEEP EAGLE DEALER. The Blades were responsible for Sunday‘s nailâ€"biting overtime drama when they couldn‘t hold on to a 4â€"2 third period lead. Oakville 5, Hamilton 4 OT (Sunday): Gord Kalverda set the stage for the big goal with some hard work in a goal mouth scramble. Mike Roberts took the cue and "banged it home" for his second of the night. Matt Interbartolo also had a pair of goals with a single to Mike Roberts. In the assist departâ€" ment, Mike Byrne picked up a pair with singles to TJustin Praamsma, Matt Swain, Mike Sikora, Conrad Praamsma, Matt Honchar, Cory Waring, Kent Williams and Gord Kalverda. Oakville managed to tie the game up at 4â€"4 in the third, but fell behind for good on a Hamilton power play. Other goal scorers were Mike Byrne, Matt Swain and Mike Roberts. Mike Roberts, Matt Interbartolo and Matt Honchar each picked up a pair of assists while singles went to Mike Sikora and Kent Williams. Oakville 6, Hamilton 4 (Friday): Jason Slaney picked up a pair of goals with singles to Matt Honchar, Mike Sikora, Mike Roberts and Kent Williams. BANTAM "A" One tick away on the clock was all that separated the King Caledon Farms/TD Bank Rangers from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) champiâ€" onship in Newmarket Monday night. Newmarket, however, managed to get the puck over the line with just one secâ€" ond left in the overtime period to tie the game up at 5â€"5. Oakville, which now leads the sixâ€"point series 5â€"1, are back in Newmarket tonight to try and wrap things up. The two teams went to the overtime period (obviously not sudden death) tied at 3â€"3. And twice in overtime Oakville scored the goâ€"ahead goal but just couldn‘t hang on. Bryan Kirsten opened the scoring and then Mark Smith and Matt Groese each added a pair. Assists went to Jeff Hussey, Ryan Bayley, Gordie Ball and Mark Smith. It‘s been a long haul for Oakville which has put together four straight series wins against Milton (3â€"0), Fort Erie (3â€"0), â€" Owen Sound (3â€"2) and Leamington (3â€" 2) Rochester tournament: Oakville kept its competiâ€" tive fires burning on the weekend making it all the way to the championship game of the Fire On Ice tournament, despite not having a full complement of skaters. Syracuse proved to be their nemesis, however. The American team handed Oakville its only round robin loss 4â€"2 (Oakville defeated host Rochester 4â€"1 and tied Hamilton 2â€"2) and then defeated them 3â€"2 in the championship game. It was actually a tough break for Oakville which gave up the winning goal in the last minute while on the powerplay. Still, the coaches were pleased that although lackâ€" ing in players, t.l}xg team wasn‘t lackmg in heart. EE WEE "A" The Oakville Rangers will play for the OMHA championship after cruising to a 5â€"1 win over Owen Sound, wrapping up the bestâ€"ofâ€"five series in four games. Oakville 5, Owen Sound 1 (March 12, Oakville wins series 3â€"1): Gary Futterman contributed a hatâ€" trick while singles went to Justin Warwick and Luke Ridley. Jamie Levey had a pair of assists with single markers to Dan McCaw, Shawn Butchart, Bryant Patriquin and Jonathan Tod. ‘ Oakville 4, Owen Sound 1 (March 8): a well rounded attack saw single goals to Shawn Butchart, Jamie Levey, Jonathan Tod and Shane Labelle and single assists to Jamie Levey, Jonathan Tod, Jackson Downey and Dave Meathrel. Owen Sound 1, Oakville 0 (March 6). Oakville 6, Owen Sound 4 (March 5): Dave Meathrel scored a pair of goals with singles to Jonathan Tod, Justin Warwick, Jackson Downey and Gary Futterman. Luke Ridley contributed four assists with singles to Jamie Levey, Jackson Downey, Geoff Schmid, Shane Labelle and Dave Meathrel. ATOM "AA" The National Cellular Rangers‘ dreams of a shot at the championship were crushed by Burlington last week.
