She added it was an example of all levâ€" els of government working together, regardless of political stripe, to put Canadians back to work. Barthold Hoemann, senior viceâ€"president of North American operations for Lear Seating, said the competition amongst cities to woo the plant was fierce, but three factors helped Oakville wrestle away the jobs. Hoemann listed government assistance, Oakville‘s aggressive and accommodating pursuit of the plant, and the proximity to the Ford plant as the trio of reaâ€" sons that combined to seal the deal. "Lear needed an intense training program because we didn‘t have anyâ€" one in the area who knew how to make seats," said Hoemann in reference to the jobsOntario program. "We could have located one â€" one or one and a half hours away from the plant, but we found things in Oakville equal to or better than other locations." He added Lear is committed to spending money to maintain the stateâ€"ofâ€" theâ€"art facility, and said he was pleased with progress at the plant which is making a new product. The Lear facility in St. Thomas will make seats for the Grand Marquis Crown Victoria and will replace current production in Mexico. Lear estiâ€" mates the $2â€"million loan and $1.1â€"million jobsOntario conditional grant will help create more than 225 jobs at the new St. Thomas facility. Under the current jobsOntario training program, any company in the province can apply for assistance and may receive a credit of up to $10,000 per new employee. Local store to be renovated (Continued from page 1) to start its facelift at the end of this month. Melvin Redman, senior vice president of store planning, explained that the major renovations will take place inside the storé with the external Walâ€" Mart sign saved for last. Stores within malls like Trafalgar Village will maintain the same style of entrances while floorspace will also remain identical. Most store cafeterias will be replaced by McDonald‘s. All locaâ€" tions will remain open during construction, however. "We are eager to get started on the process of converting the stores," said West. "In my 28 years in retailing I have never seen anyone totally renovate 122 stores in a yéar." According to Martin, however, that‘s business as usual for Walâ€"Mart south of the border. Walâ€"Mart Canada currently employs 16,000 workers in Canada, split 70% fullâ€"time and 30% partâ€"time. West said employees are traditionally paid 10% more than Woolco and will also enjoy profitâ€"sharing. You can‘t expect good customer service, West explained, if you aren‘t willing to offer such incentives. One example of this will be the adoption of Walâ€"Mart‘s concept of greeters who are responsible for welcoming shoppers to each store to "make them feel welcome." While Martin said a wide range of criteria was used to decide which Woolco stores were purchased, he would not "single out" unionization as the deciding factor. In the United States Walâ€"Mart owns 2,020 stores and has approximately 520,000 employees. ALONE, ANGRY, CONFUSED, HURTING?
