Burlington mayor, Walter Mulkewich, suggested the HRCA and the region split the differâ€" ence. Milton mayor, Gord Krantz, sugâ€" gested the possibility that the HRCA not pay their property taxes. After three years, municipal governmen; would assume default ownership Both suggestions were discarded. "The HRCA was the meat in the sandwich. They got a double hit the region and the province," said regional CAO John Burke. "There was considerable advance notice, but in the end, it‘s a question 0i who pays. It‘s just money going around in a circle. Where‘s the restraint? I‘d suggest there isn‘t any a all." Regional finance commissioner Joe Rinaldo, said including the $71,000 shortfall on the regional ta» levy would increase taxes to the exten that taxpayers would still get a smal tax break from last year, but not the anticipated 0.4%. "We can wring our hands, but as see it, we have no option other than t pay the levy," said Oakville councilo Keith Bird. Krantz suggested that th¢ region "say no" and let the HRCA g through the province to get the ley approved. In that way, the provincj would have to defend itself on th« reduction in subsidy. "We have no issue with th HRCA," said Rinaldo. "It‘s off loa ing by the province as they ask us t pick up a bigger piece of the pie."
