Look who dropped by Lung Association '3 $1 -million g0lf competition By NORMAN NELSON Oakville Beaver Sports Editor A good whitewater run in his kayak on Sunday in a snowy river 200 kilometres north of Quebec City, has secured Oakville’s Peter Nor third spot on Canada’s four- member team. An event is also on tap for Japan but he’s not sure whether he will be able to attend “because of ï¬nancial concerns.†It has also guaranteed the Oakville Trafalger High School graduate, who has twice before made the Canadian team, an excit- ing summer of international compeâ€" tition at venues throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. The American series kicks off later this spring with two races in Colorado. In mid-June it’s over to Europe for the World Cup series which includes stops in England, Germany, Spain and France. Like hockey, whitewater slalom is also an event in the Olympic Games, but it sure doesn’t attract the same kind of money. Unlike hockey players and other athletes in mainstream sports, Nor’s success tends not to increase his wallet â€"â€" only his bills. Thebill to keep him on the cir- cuit this year, he estimates, will top $15,000. (“MEMBER REWARD PROGRAM By NORMAN NELSON Oakville Beaver Sports Editor No one won the lung associa- tion’s ,$1-million, hole-in-one shoot- off in Oakville over the weekend, but organizers are still buzzing about the winner of the semiâ€"ï¬nal round â€" none other than Premier Bob Rae. The premier dropped by Oakville’s Sportdomes around 7:30 pm. Friday night to participate in the unique fundraising event which was organized by a trio of lung association chapters in Halton, Peel and Metro/York. “It was an absolute surprise,†said Scott Ching, the event chair- man from the Peel chapter. “It was not on his itinerary. He and is fami- ly just decided to come down.†While the beleaguered premier’s standing may not be very high in the opinion polls these days, Liz Porter, executive director of the Halton lung association said “we were very delighted to see him.†will provide about $1,200 to cover accommodation and a rental vehicle in Europe. What that means is that besides being a full-time athlete, he also has to be a full time salesman â€"â€" for himself. A trust fund has been set up and he’s always on the lookout for spon- sors. His biggest supporter is Hiker’s Haven on Bronte Road which provides» his kayaks for com- petition. Besides the show of support, she said his presence generated some much needed, last-minute publicity. Even more surprising and delightful, she said, was having the Premier subsequently return on Sunday for the playoff rounds which he had qualiï¬ed for. His other full-time pursuit is his course at Carleton University which Peter Nor is now ranked second in Canada in whiteWater 'slalom. Along with'40 other participants, the Premier had managed to qualify by driving a ball into a three-and-a- half foot target set back 70 yards (picture a dog house, with a three- and-a-half foot hole on one of the 501 Speers Rd. The first playoff round on Sunday was a ‘closest to the pin’ competition which Rae won. He actually brushed the ball off the pin and it came to rest no more that half a foot away. The next closest competitor war about two feet away which gave Premier Rae the first trip to the prize table where he chose a 14- inch television isn’t exactly basket weaving.
