1 Spread the gardening load by planting and transplanting perennials in early May. This will leave the last week and early June for planting the tender annuals. Vegetable garden planting fits across both periods. Planting perennials When planting perennials, set plants in groups of at least three or five with small plants. Avoid mixâ€" tures of different colors of varieties except the odd large spectacular variâ€" ety as a focal point plant. This will provide a noticeable mass of color that will catch the eye. A mixed group of colors or varieties confuses the eye and interrupts a smooth trip through the flower bed. Most perenâ€" nials may be divided now. Iris, popâ€" pies, bleeding heart, and peonies are best left until after they flower. When dividing, pull rather than cut the roots apart. This will leave more roots with each piece and allow rapid recovery from the operation. In early May, annual plants may be placed in cold frames or put outâ€" doors during the mild days protecting them on cold nights. This will get them ready to start rapid growth when they are planted out towards the end of May. For shady spots, vary hostas with astilbe, bergenia, digitalis, ferns, Siberian iris, ligularia, trollius, daylilies, tiger lilies and bleeding heart. In sheltered areas, try the pink and blue varieties of hydrangea macroâ€" phylla. Mahonia is a taller shrub for shade, kerria is another. Azaleas and rhododendrons are ideal shade plants easily grown on the north and east side of the house. Acid soil is easily obtained by adding bales of peat moss to the planting area. Raising the level of the ground a foot or two will keep surface water from reducing the acidity of the soil. The use of oak leaves and pine neeâ€" dles as mulch will help keep the planting area suitable for acid loving plants. Holly grows well with rhodoâ€" dendrons. If you are doubtful which plant will grow in a shady area that is not as dark as under a low growing spruce try the plant in the site. Watch it for the next year or two. If it is a flowering plant and it does not flower. move it out and try something else. Plants will often flower sporadiâ€" cally in shadier areas, but it takes a few years before they die out comâ€" pletely. If a tree is causing the shade, removing a few lower limbs and thinâ€" ning the centre will often let in enough light to grow many perenniâ€" als. Vegetable garden The vegetable garden should be dug over as soon as possible. Add some organic material during the digâ€" ging. Sow peas now. Beets, parsnips, carrots, radishes, leeks, and lettuce may be sown during May. Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower may be sown outdoors in May or plants set out. Peppers, squash, and cucumber are set out in early June, tomatoes traâ€" ditionally on May 24th weekend, and melon is seeded indoors now to set out in June. Late potatoes may be planted in May. They grow well in garbageâ€"can size containers. When planting the vegetable garden, grow a row for the Foodshare, our local foodbank. Planting and transplanting of trees, shrubs, roses, fruit trees, herbs, and evergreens should be done in May. Container grown stock may be lant and transplant in May planted all summer. May is the month to apply preâ€"emergent crab grass conâ€" trol and birch leaf miner control. The lawn It is time to start mowing the lawn with a really sharp blade. If the lawn looks thin, try aerating, top dressing, and overseeding during May. Use a fast germinating seed mix of mostly hybrid perennial ryegrass and Chewings fescue. This will proâ€" duce a green lawn by late summer. I found the fast grass mix blends well with the surrounding lawn.
