B etween 600 and 700 students walked eight This is the third year in which participants in Men Walking Against Male Violence have hit the roads and streets of Ontario. But it‘s the first time the group has shuffled through the streets of Oakville. On the walk to Toronto, the group will journey through scores of communities, address thousands of students, _ and hold more than 40 dinners and public events. Group organizer, Matthew Behrens, points to statistics which proclaim that six of every 10 Canadian women endure vioâ€" lence in their relationships with men. "It‘s very clear; it‘s a war," he said. "There are refugees. One hundred thousand women were refugees in shelters last year. The war is being waged at all levels of cultures." About 62% of all women murâ€" dered in Canada died as a result of male violence in the home, stuâ€" a "Canada Best /ma/(/ff /Vm/rya‘ "_CCNA Better Newspapers Competition 1993 wWOSss students Darren Blackburn and Craig Munday. More than 1,900 women are raped every day in the United States; a British survey reveals 66% of men admitted using violence against their female partners; and in Japan, 78% of the women are beaten by their male partners. Any money the group receives will be split evenly between paying for organizing costs and donating to local women‘s shelters along the walk route, said Behrens. The walk began in Windsor, April 4th, and will end in Toronto, May 6th. Men Walking Against Male Violence began conâ€" tacting schools last year in hopes of getting student support for its April 4th to May 6th walk from Windsor to Toronto. The TAB to WOSS walk, with student participation fairly evenly divided between the two schools, became reality about three weeks ago, when Craig Munday and Darren Blackburn of WOSS* Personal Safety Council decided the walk "would be a good way to raise awareness about vioâ€" lence." The students organized their participation through Men Walking Against Male Violence coâ€"ordinator Ken Hancock "who told us there‘s too much violence in today‘s society, and felt someâ€" thing should be done about it by organzing a (protest) walk," said FRIDAY, MAY 6, 1994 (See ‘Walk‘ page 4) Town passes 0% mill rate increase By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff Well, almost. True to the delays which have plagued the budget almost from the getâ€"go, the evening â€" which would have otherwise progressed quickly â€" hit the annual speedâ€" bump of garbage rebates for conâ€" dominium residents. As a result, the proceedings were stalled and the issue held over until Monday. Fortunately the bulk of the budâ€" get â€" such as the 0% mill rate increase and the prioritized proâ€" jects for the Canadaâ€"Ontario Infrastructure Works Program â€" were passed at last. The Budget Committee‘s April 13th wish list was approved with only slight changes. At the top of the list and left unchanged are the four phases of Neyagawa Boulevard. These must be built in concert with the Highway 403 extension in order for the province to build and pay for the necessary interchange. If not, this would cost the Town about $7 million. Other key components of the list: Oakville‘s portion of the Halton Region 800 Trunk Radio System designed to upgrade and integrate emergency response communication throughout the region; the Oakville Humane Society building expansion; Kerr Street and Downtown streetscape/streetlighting. Improvements totalling $3.3 million for improvements to Speers Road from Third Line to Bronte Road were deleted. Money for the Royal Windsor/Ford Drive intersection (built to accommodate Ford of Canada‘s paint plant expansion) was added.
