CIS softball champions The Appleby College girls softball team captured the Canadian Independent Schools U-20 girls softball title this past spring. They finished the regular season with a 5-0-1 mark and then won all three games in the championship tournament. In their first game, they defeated Trinity College of Port Hope 17-2 and followed up with an 8-1 win over Trafalgar Castle from Whitby. The final, fittingly, proved to be the toughest match, as Appleby scored two runs early and then rode strong defence and strong pitching by Krystal Eckersall to a 2-1 victory over Pickering College of Newmarket. This marks Appleby's fifth title in the last six years. Dana Strong scored both runs in the final game, with captain Tara-Lynn Bennett driving in the winning run. The team also finished third in the Volpe Division of the Halton High School league. Unfortunately, with the final exams scheduled in the same week as playoffs, Appleby lost their first play off game, which wrapped up another good season. Their final record was 17-6-1 with both leagues combined, and the Bishop's College Tournament in Lennoxville, Quebec included. Team members in the picture are O'Mahoney, Rebecca Gray, Michelle Krystal Eckersall, Ashley Cochrane, Berry, Jennifer Rook, Dana Strong, Kim Jones, Marsha Watson, Shannon Tara-Lynn Bennett, Victoria MacKasey Cater, Stephanie Moffatt, Ashley and coach J.C. Hebert. THE BOYS AND GIRLS OF SUMMER: the Longo's Lynx (ages 5 and 6) are ripping up the field as they continue to play great T-ball. With many first year players, the calibre of play is quite something to see. Good fielding, solid base running and 'holding up that ball' are ensuring the Lynx success. While scoring isn't kept at this level, the players know they are all winners. Improving their skills and having fun is the name of the game. And three cheers for their super sponsor, Longo's. BACK ROW: Jessica Correa, Lucas DeLuca, Kian Burnett, Andrew Kiss, Jack Houlahan, Benjamin Rideout and Matt Hamel. FRONT ROW: Monica Modestino, Brian Doherty, Declan Baxter, Eric Purcell and Michael Davey. ABSENT: Brandon Littlemore and Craig Barney.
