A4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 30, 1999 * Halton councillor wants to be top Tory bureaucrat By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Regional councillor Steven Sparling wants to become the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada's other leader -- that is, its national president. Sparling declared his intentions to about 15 riding faithful recently at the Federal Progressive Conservative Association of Oakville's annual gen eral meeting. The 40-year-old local business man faces one other hopeful in his quest for federal presidency, to be decided at the party's upcoming October convention in Toronto. Sparling will likely be supported in his bid by the six local riding associa tion delegates and three youths who were also chosen to attend the con vention. "With currently 19 members of parliament and a new leader in Joe Clark, we need an experienced, ener getic person to revive voter interest among the electorate," said Sparling. Steven Sparling: wants to be federal Tory president He is encouraged by recent elec tion results in New Brunswick where 33-year-old Tory premiere Bernard Lord won in a landslide victory. But beyond Atlantic Canada there is much work to be done, said Sparling, especially in Quebec, and in Western Canada where PC support has been lost to the Reform Party. The party also needs to do a lot of ground to make up in vote-rich Ontario. Sparling describes the role of party president as an ambassadorship, help ing each of the 301 riding associations in the country prepare, financially and organizationally, over the next two years before another federal election is called. His formula for election success is to help each riding bring in 500 mem bers and raise $30,000. There are cur rently 90,000 card-carrying PCs in the country. Sparling said he is well-suited for the federal party presidency because of his "own unique political history." He has been a local politician for eight years, a longtime party fundrais er, who by his own account has fun nelled hundreds of thousands of dol lars into the party, and he was also a candidate in*fhe last federal election in 1997, comihg in second behind Oakville Liberal MP Bonnie Brown. In that election Sparling garnered 31% of the riding's vote while Brown won with 47%. The Reform candi date gathered 17% of the vote. Talk of the Tories joining forces with the Reform Party to create a United Alterffative, as a means to pre vent vote-splitting between the two right-wing parties, is not an option federally, but may be locally, said Sparling, if sanctioned by Joe Clark. No talks have been held between the two local riding associations yet, he added. Sparling is not sure that vote-split- ting resulted in his unsuccessful bid in 1997 -- he thinks it was more a result o f general voter malaise with the Tories. "It's my intention to do what we can to reach out to Canadians and bring confidence back into the party." > Police officers honoured for community work * Three Halton Regional Police officers have been hon oured by the Oakville Branch of St. John Ambulance for their dedication and commitment to their community. Constables Crystal Kelly and Steve MacDonald each received a Special Provincial Certificate of Appreciation. Police Chief Ean Algar earned the St. John Ambulance Priory Vote of Thanks. Kelly and MacDonald were committee chairs of a fundraising charity dance held in November 1998. The suc cessful dance raised $2,000 which was donated to St. John Ambulance for community service. Chief Algar became a St. John member in 1995, where he first served on the Community Relations committee and was later appointed chair of the Fundraising Committee. Algar then based on St. John's behalf with a number of community groups and organizations. He has been success ful in obtaining funds from service clubs to provide First Aid training equipment for both the Oakville Branch and the Brigade. The Chief also arranged for a donation of two-way radios for the Brigade and organized a successful fundraising din ner. THERE'S A SPACEFOR YOU!
