M ade from fresh, sometimes still not ripe grapes, and a wine that is to be drunk when still young, it is the Vinho Verde from northern Portugal. Verde stands for green. This does not relate I i W I J B I I PV to the colour of ALLA the w ine, P R P R S P A P fH F R although one can tUtrwrrt&Vntn detect a greenish wine Cellar tint. Nor does it refer to the colour of the drinker who has indulged too much in sam pling this fresh and fruity Portuguese wine. W hat the colour does refer to is the taste of the wine which, more often than not, reminds us of the flavour of green berries. A Vinho Verde can be produced from a number of dif ferent grape varieties, both red and white grapes, all of which are native to this northerly w ine region of Portugal. Unfortunately, we currently have only the white wines available in Canada and sampling a red one will require a visit to Portugal - costly perhaps, but very rewarding. Although I visited a number o f times, I was never quite able to figure out if the grapes are completely ripened, which of course should be the case considering the long and hot summer, or if the wine only takes on a green taste. I suspect that the latter is the case. The humidity o f this part of Portugal is extrem ely high, pre venting the sugar from taking over while building up a very high acidity. It is this acidity that gives the wine its "green " flavour while the lack o f sugar produces a wine that is very low in alcohol, usually less than 10%. Such low alcohol and high acidity wines m ust be enjoyed young' and cool to be fully appreciated. It is this youth, this freshness and pleasant fruit that makes a Vinho Verde a perfect choice for a refreshing summer wine. With a slight sparkle to it and the low alcohol content, a Vinho Verde is not only a good com panion to some light dishes, but ju st great as an aperitif on its own or mixed with soda water. There are a number o f Vinho Verde wines available in our regular stores. W hile some are com pletely dry, oth ers have a slight sweetness, certainly not enough to make the wine sweet, but ju st enough to take the harshness away. My recom m endation will go to each o f the wines I have listed, only one's individual palate will make the difference. The Vinho Verde from ALIANCA is a 1 on the sugar scale CSPC75663 $6.90. Also a 1 is the Vinho Verde AVELEDA CSPC 5322 for $8.05 and if you would like to try a dry one, look for the Vinho Verde GAZELA, CSPC141432 for $7.95 a bottle. In the next column, I will take a look at some other refreshing wines, suitable for the upcoming summer s e a - , son.
