e ♦ 20 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, June 6, 1999 'H om s usher in new season with new coach The Northern Football Conference kicked off its 46th campaign this week end. On Saturday night, the six-time defending champion Oakville Longhorns were slated to journey north to tackle the Sudbury Spartans while last year's league finalists, the Markham Raiders, ventured to the Sault to take on the Storm. The off-season was eventful with Canada's only remaining senior ama teur football league reduced to four teams. The Peterborough Packers have not returned due to financial difficulties while the North Bay Bulldogs were granted a leave of absence for a second consecutive season. The four teams will play an eight- game schedule over nine weeks with all teams having the July 1st holiday weekend off. The regular season will conclude with two games in Sudbury on July 31 at which time this year's inductees to the NFC Hall o f Fame will be recog nized. The semifinals are slated for August 7 with the two survivors meeting for the Plante Memorial Trophy on August 14. The Longhorns will be looking for their unprecedented seventh league playoff championship with a new coach. Well, actually, it's an old coach. Bruce Gilroy, a long time head coach for the 'Homs in the 80s, has stepped back into take the reigns from the departed Tony Molnar. Molnar, a Burlington resident, was at the helm for the 'Homs current string of six straight NFC titles, but in this off season he decided to call it quits. Also not returning this year is Tony's son, Jason Molnar. The Beaver has talked to both 'Homs owner Steve Harrington and coach Molnar and we'll have that story in an upcoming edition. But as Molnar said, there's not much of a story. Molnar said he put a tremen dous amount of time into the team and that it was just time "to turn the page." Harrington said he'll be missed not just for the outstanding job he was able to do on the field but off it, as well. "One thing about Tony, he was very good organizationally off the field. That's why his departure is pretty dev astating." As significant, is the loss of another Molnar, at least for this year. Harrington confirmed that starting quarterback Jason Molnar will not suit up this year, because of work and fam ily commitments as well as a shoulder injury, suffered in a league game last year, that hasn't completely healed. Last year, the 'Homs had to with stand the loss of quarterback Mark Demerling who retired after a long and stellar NFC career. "We've got four guys vying for quarterback," said Harrington. The 'Homs continue their schedule next Saturday (June 12) in Markham. The 'Homs then play the next three games at home -- June 19 against Sault Ste Marie; June 26 against Markham; July 3 is the bye week; and July 10 against Sudbury Spartans. That could actually be it for the home schedule for the year. The Homs next two games are on the road, July 17 at Sault Ste Marie and July 24 in Markham. The regular season then concludes with the above mentioned Hall of Fame games in Sudbury on July 31 (as part of the double header, the 'Homs will play Sault Ste. Marie). To play again at home, the 'Homs would have to earn home field advan tage in the playoffs.
