Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger was among the many who responded to Tanner's statement on Twitter with a "like" or a "retweet." Eisenberger, who is a member of the Hamilton police board, said "for me, the ability to save lives overrides liability con cerns." "I want all of our first re sponders to save lives, and to protect themselves." Eisenberger is awaiting Thursday's Hamilton po lice board meeting to find out if it is the board or the chief who decides whether to equip officers with nal oxone. He is also awaiting a re- port on naloxone from Girt. "I understand there are liability issues if things go awry, and if it's adminis tered the wrong way or at the wrong time ...," Eisen- berger said. "At the end of the day, it's about saving lives and protecting offi cers." Clint Twolan, president of the Hamilton Police As sociation, also responded favourably to Tanner's tweet and said he thinks it's a great idea. "Naloxone is a valuable tool we can use, first and foremost, to protect the of ficers, and also to help save lives." Twolan said knowing the dangers of coming into contact with fentanyl, offi cers would also want to know naloxone is readily available to them. Many times, police are the first on scene and "time is of essence," he added. Twolan said the SIU's position is irresponsible. "It causes leaders and officers to second-guess themselves." SIU spokesperson Mon ica Hudon said the watch dog is regularly notified of serious injuries and deaths where police involvement is limited to emergency medical treatment, but the agency does not keep sta tistics on how many such investigations it has done. "Our records indicate that a case in Peel earlier this week was the SIU's first death investigation in volving naloxone." Tanner said he expects naloxone to be in Halton's front-line officers' hands within two or three months, once training is completed. Halton has about 740 officers, with just over half o f them on the front line, he said. Notice of Community Consultation Toronto Pearson is fast becoming one of the world's leading airports.
