A motion, brought for ward by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, asking the province to extend its study area for Greenbelt expan sion was approved unani mously by Oakville council Feb. 27 and recently ap proved in a 12-9 vote at re gional council. The motion urges the province to expeditiously grow the Greenbelt by in corporating appropriate Whitebelt lands within the Greater Golden Horse shoe's "inner ring" to pro tect Ontario's limited fresh- water and natural heritage features. Whitebelt lands are lo cated between the outer edge of approved urban set tlement areas surrounding the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton and the Greenbelt Plan area. They are currently un developed, but are not pro tected from urban develop ment in the future. The Ontario govern ment is currently seeking input as it considers ex panding the Greenbelt to include areas most in need of protection, including moraines, cold water streams and wetlands lo cated in the outer ring of the Greater Golden Horse shoe. It hosted open houses in January and February for public input. Burton said with these votes the councils have sent a clear message that they are against sprawl. He noted sprawl not on ly causes traffic congestion and overcrowded schools, but also additional un wanted intensification in communities that are man dated to grow under the province's Place to Grow Act.
