NEWS Smallegange re-elected chair of Conservation Halton board A local resident will con­ tinue as chair o f the board o f Conservation Halton. Gerry Smallegange, the board's citizen representa­ tive from Burlington, was re-elected chair during Conservation Halton's (CH) recent annual general meeting. He will serve his second term as its chair, and is the 10th chair o f the board in its history. Smallegange, who is the president and CEO o f Bur­ lington Hydro, has been on the board since 2011. Halton Hills councillor Moya Johnson was elected vice-chair o f the CH board and will serve in the role for the first time. She has been with the board since 2015. The Conservation Hal­ ton board o f directors is made up o f 18 elected offi­ cials and citizen represen­ tatives appointed by the communities within CH's watershed - Burlington, Halton Hills, Hamilton, Milton, Mississauga, Oak­ ville and Puslinch. "Over the past 12 months, the board o f direc­ tors have worked together to implement governance enhancements, particular­ ly in the areas o f finance and audit," Smallegange said in a release. "I am proud to be a part o f this vibrant organization that has embraced change and is striving for greater effectiveness and collabora­ tion." At the AGM, Conserva­ tion Halton also released its 2017 annual report. It pro­ vides an update on its prog­ ress over the past year to­ ward achieving targets for objectives and measures in its strategic plan, entitled Metamorphosis. The annual report touched on the nine objec­ tives identified by CH's se­ nior leadership team: pub­ lic safety; sustainability; watershed resources; recre­ ation, education and tour­ ism opportunities; partner­ ships; community planning and development; natural resource management; cus­ tomer satisfaction; and dig­ ital transformation. Conservation Halton chief administrative officer Hassaan Basit provided an overview o f some o f the highlights o f the annual re­ port and the progress made by the organization toward targets set out within the strategic plan. He noted there was an in­ crease in the number o f re­ al-time hydrometric sta­ tions from 16-32, which has enlarged the area that can be monitored by flood oper­ ations during significant weather events. Basit also noted that Conservation Halton parks received one million visits in 2017, with more than 65,000 people participating in parks educational pro­ gramming. There were improve­ ments in the comments and review times o f permit ap­ plications, planning appli­ cations and minor permit applications.
