Bud Brown and Downtown Village Constable Gary Ribble Friday, May 14, 1999 SALT wants to protect seniors safe from scam artists By Howard M ozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Victimizing seniors is about as abhorrent as it gets but thanks to the successful and innovative SALT Oakville program, help is only a phone call away. Started in 1992, Seniors and Law- Enforcement Together is a self-funded, volunteer council for seniors, care givers and police which develops pro grams to serve the needs of the elderly. This ranges from establishing mall dis plays featuring valuable information to hosting crime prevention seminars. These activities are especially important when one considers the num ber of predators out there who prey on the honesty and trust of their elderly victims. The bottom line, says SALT Oakville chair John 'Bud' Brown, is to do whatever is necessary to better pre pare seniors for the unforeseen. "We're trying to instill in them the awareness of what could happen," explained Brown, who said SALT is always on the lookout for new mem bers. Anyone interested is encouraged to call 844-2356. Halton Regional Police Downtown Village Constable Gary Ribble, who oversees the SALT initiative, puts it this way: "Our policy is that you haven't lived to 65 or 70 only to allow someone to ruin the best years of your life." SALT Oakville, the first program of its kind in Canada, also involves the Ontario Provincial Police, represented by Burlington Detachment Constable Sonya Siebert. SALT receives support from CHWO Radio, which runs public ser vice announcements and pays for the (See 'Crimes' page 18) St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts (John Laing - Artistic Director) Presents HAYDN'S OAKVILLE BEAVER_______________ Enjoy an evening with our own St. Jude's Senior Choir, their fine classical orchestra and the superb vocal quartet o f J a n e t O berm ey er (soprano), S a n d ra Boyes (alto), M artin H outm an (tenor), and M ichael Downie (bass) Saturday, May 29, 1999 At 8:00 p.m. Tickets: $ 1 8 ($ 1 5 fo r sen io rs /s tuden ts) Please ca ll 9 0 5 -8 4 4 -3 9 7 2 Join us for an A rt Show of local artists from 11:00 a.m. to 6 :0 0 p.m. and at a post concert reception in Victoria Hall.
