C2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER AUTOMOTIVE Wednesday, May 12, 1999 Wiper care safety tips □ Check the condition of your wind shield wiper blades at least once a month when performing routine car maintenance or cleaning. Don't wait until you're driving in hazardous weather. □ Clean the wiper blades with a damp rag when cleaning the windshield. Wipe free of dirt, grime and bugs. □ Wiper blades should be firm and smooth from end to end, not "dried out." □ Immediately replace blades that are chipped, tom, cracked or split. □ Blades should clear, clean and squeegee the glass completely. At first glance the Accent makes you wonder why there are so many of the little terrors on the road. After all, isn't it just a simple entry-level, bare-bones alternative to a well-equipped used car? Doesn't it come with a sewing machine m otor that's designed only for short-haul, low-speed urban commutes? Wrong on both counts. Yes, the front-wheel drive Accent is small, and proud of it, thank you very much. In the great tradition o f the Volkswagen Beetle (the origi nal, not the reconstituted ver sion), Citroen 2CV and Austin Mini, the Accent is a well-pack- aged three-door hatchback, or four-door sedan that tries hard to act bigger than its com pact dimensions would imply. It also doesn't hurt that it is one of the most affordable vehicles around. First o f all, the three-do6r Accent is actually a cleverly dis guised hatchback masquerading as a sedan. The hatch feature allows for maximum use o f the available storage space, particularly with the rear seat folded. Four-door versions come equipped with a conventional trunk. The Accent also comes with m ore sophisticated underpin nings than you would expect from a car in this class, includ ing four-wheel independent sus pension with coil springs and anti-sway bars front and rear. For a car o f such diminutive stature, the standard A ccent pow erplant is anything but. Nestled between the front fend ers is a 1.5-litre SOHC 12-valve four-cylinder engine that pro duces 92 horsepower. By com parison, the four-cylinder Chevy M etro m akes 79 horsepow er from its 1.3-litres, and the Suzuki Esteem, with a 1.6-litre four-banger, delivers 95 ponies. 1999 Hyundai Accent ★ Three-door L or GS hatchback, four- door GL sedan. ★1.5-litre SOHC four-cylinder engine pro ducing 92 horsepower. ★ Five-speed manual, or optional four- speed automatic transmission. ★ Excellent small-car packaging. ★ Engine output very competitive for a sub-compact. ★ Attractive, contemporary design inside and but. ★ Good assortment of standard and optional equipment. ★ Base price : $11,600 A five-speed manual trans m ission is standard on all A ccents, while a four-speed automatic is optional. The Accent, even in its most basic form, arrives with touches such as full carpeting, deluxe floor console, remote fuel door release, retractable dual cupholders and interm ittent w indshield wipers. M ove up a notch to the GSi hatchback or GL sedan and the standard equipment list grows to include power steering, a tach, five-w ay adjustable driver's seat, tinted glass and improved cut-pile carpeting. In addition, the GS com es with a 60/40 split folding rear seat and a rear win dow wiper/washer. As for options, all Accents can be ordered with air condi tioning, plus, depending on the model, a variety of other conve nience items such as power w in dow s, 14-inch alloy w heels, dual pow er outside m irrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, CD player and m an ual tilt moonroof. B uyers in the A ccen t's league aren't looking for, or expecting , status cars w ith pow er-everything and m ulti valve engines that scream high performance. They do want a sane, sensible and reliable set o f wheels that will carry them in Time for spring waxing Generally, it's a good idea to wax your car a couple of times a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. Under normal circumstances, the finish on your car takes more abuse than any other part of the car, including the engine, brakes, shocks, tires and transmission. That's because your vehicle is continually exposed to damage from the environment such as salt, sun, dust, rain and airborne pollutants. The dam age begun outside continues even when your car is parked in a garage, eating away at wax and harming the finish. Protecting the finish is important because it protects the steel skin beneath from mst and corrosion. The way your car looks affects its resale value and even the way you feel behind the wheel, according to the automotive experts. The time and money invested in keeping your car looking good are well spent. Your car will look its best and it' 11 be worth more, too.
