Third year textile student Peggy Mersereau created these scenes of nature and had them framed by a friend of hers in the furniture studio. Hence both the first and second place winners will receive original hand-crafted awards. "They are as identical as the can be (for orig inals)," explains the 45-year-old textile artist. "They are numbered, too - one of two and two of two. Since they were done for a commission, I feel they shouldn't be repeated." And the frames, she adds, make up an integral part of the awards. "They don't overwhelm the piece," she explains. She describes her Oakville scenes as "a styl ized representation of the natural beauty of the Oakville area." And although her original idea was to create one four-part screen, when she was asked to design the two Rising Star awards rather than one big one, she scaled down to two scenes. Art flower show opens tomorrow The Flower Show. 1999, an exhibition devoted to paintings of flowers by David Arathoon, Bev Rodin-Hagan, Pauline Holancin, Joyce Kellock, Francine Noreau, and Sheila Siegerman will open at the McLaren-Bames Gallery tomorrow (Saturday) and continue in the gallery at 133 Reynolds St. until April 10th. Arathoon's specialty is floral still life; Rodin-Hagan, Holancin, and Kellock will be exhibiting watercolours of flowers; Noreau uses strong, vivid colours in her oils; and Siegerman is famous for botanical paintings.
