♦ Sunday, April 11, 1999 Oakville Beaver Weekend 11 Volunteers plan to clean up Oakville April 17th The River Oaks Association of Residents - ROAR - will join other com munity groups in helping to clean up the environment on Saturday, April 17th - Earth Day. Last year, more than 100 adults and children participated in the clean-up to removed "all sorts of material that accu mulated in the parks and ravines over the winter," says clean-up organizer Nick Markettos, vice-president of ROAR. Participants can sign-up and pick up plastic bags and gloves at the River Oaks Recreation Centre between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The bags and gloves will be donated by Oakville Parks and Recreation. Volunteers may also bring their own bags and gloves. Those arriving after 10 a.m. can go directly to Munn's Creek Park, or a ravine or park near their homes. ROAR's clean-up will be part of a larger effort, the Earth Week Clean-Up, organized annually by the Oakville Community for Peace, Ecology and Humah Rights. It's eighth annual clean-up will cover 15 sites across town. The clean-up sites and meeting areas are: □ Bronte Harbour - meet at Bronte Fluffs Park, west of Bronte Road □ Petro Canada Park - enter off Bronte Road north of Bridge Road (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) □ Bronte Creek Provincial Park - gather at the southern entrance off Burloak Drive (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) □ Our Community Cares - at Burloak Drive just north of Lakeshore □ Shell Park - meet at the main entrance on Lakeshore west of Mississaga Street □ Glen Abbey Trails - starting at Nottinghill Park □ West Oak Trails - meet at Sixteen Hallow Park □ Munn's Creek Trails - gather at • Ride for Cancer April 25th The Great Ride 'N' Stride for the Canadian Cancer Society, happening Sunday, April 25th -- rain or shine. The event starts 1 p.m., at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. There is a 1 0 - k i l o m e t r e course for cyclists and a 5-kilometre route for walkers. All participants bringing a pledge sheet will be entered in a draw to win a bicycle. The first bike ride for cancer research was held on London, Ont., in 1971, and was billed as the Ladies Great Ride for Cancer. It featured women, and men dressed as women, in period costumes. Oakville's first Great Ride 'N' Stride for Cancer was held here in 1990. This year's co ordinator is Liz Natale, who is hop ing the event will grow in popularity and increase the money raised. As in past years, the Oakville Firefighters are challenging others to see who can raise the most money.
