Her music reviews helped build the aware ness and education of Oakville audiences and offered useful cri tiques to the musicians. Music proved therapeutic for Smithbower at various times in her life too, including her final years spent at Allendale. Up until the time she suffered a stroke last year, Smithbower played the piano every morning with residents gath ering around to sing and reminisce, and she used those same piano scales as therapy after her setback. Smithbower was very much a part of Allendale, loved by the entire staff for her wit and sense of humor, said one of the nurses. Prior to Allendale, Smithbower spent time at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and was pre sented with an electronic keyboard there by her friends at St. Andrew's, complete with ear phones, so she could play without disturbing the other patients. Brian and Diana Isherwood credit Smithbower with inspiring them to begin the St. Andrew's Choir, which sang at Smithbower's memorial Mass Saturday at 11 a.m. and the Isherwood's daughter Sarah remembers vividly Smithbower's hands as she played, particularly one Easter piece enti tled The Seven Last Words o f Christ. "She always went at it with such fervor," said Sarah Zbogak, who turned the pages of Smithbower's music as her father directed the choir. Smithbower gave such pleasure to others through her music, added Zbogak. Along with her husband Joe, Smithbower was pre-deceased by sisters Marian, Sister Dorothy of the Loretto Order, Rhona, Betty, Loma, Isabel and brother John. She is survived by her three chil dren, brother Gordon, sisters Madeleine, Margaret and Joan, seven grand-children and five great-grandchildren.
