Oakville-based pharmaceutical company SmithKline Beecham Pharma last week donated five copies of Cope With Cancer, an interactive computer CD-ROM, to the Oakville Public Library. The CD was developed with the assistance of some of Canada's top oncologists and healthcare practitioners. It contains up-to-date information on cancer treatments and resources, and com ments from cancer survivors on how they dealt with the disease. . It also contains a Kids Zone section to assist children whose parents have cancer. "Cope with Cancer was developed based on the principle that informed patients are better equipped to cope with all aspects of the illness and its effects on their lives. We are proud to bring this valuable support tool to cancer patients," said Elaine Sutherland, Therapeutic Marketing Manager for SmithKline Beecham. Joan Gibb, representing the Oakville unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, and Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale also attended the presentation. "In this day and age people want the to know the nearest place they can go for help, and the var ious methods and ways of help available," explained Gibb. "We can help people more effi ciently because SmithKline Beecham has provid ed this for us. A CD-ROM is flexible and portable so people can use it in our office or take it home. People want to learn more and have a lot of ques tions. It is a great resource." Mulvale also strongly feels that the CD will benefit people recently diagnosed or battling with cancer. "It is a very important thing because people journeying with cancer need to know about their condition. Good information that is quickly acces sible is what helps them position their body to be the best it can be to fight the disease, to mobilize their own resources," said Mulvale. "When my late husband was diagnosed we called a 1-800 line right away to get information. He had a need to understand, and put into perspective, what was happening to his body. We needed to know what treatment methods were out there, and what ques tions he should ask." "In Oakville over 60,000 of our residents actively use a library card in any given year, so this is obviously the location for the CD-ROM to be accessible. For SmithKline Beecham to partner with the Cancer Society and Oakville Public Library like this is just wonderful, it is ideal," said Mulvale. SmithKline Beecham also donated 10,000 copies of Cope With Cancer to the Canadian Cancer society. The CD-ROM is available free of charge to cancer patients, and anyone interested in receiving a copy can phone the Canadian Cancer Society's Cancer Information Service at 1-888- 939-3333. 0NN0WS Over 50 bobecues and patio sets to choose from!
