Oakville council voted Monday, May 28, to approve the additional funding, which will go toward the creation of a linear walkway and landscaped connection along the Lake Ontario shoreline between Tannery Park and Waterworks Park. Town staff said this area of the shore- line currently has a very irregular topog- raphy making it extremely difficult to de- velop a linear and accessible connection between the two parks. As per the 2008 master plan, this area of shoreline was envisioned to be filled-in to create tableland for additional parkland development. The project is part of the master plan for the Sixteen Mile Creek West Shore rehabil- itation in Oakville Harbour approved by council in 2008. The tender for the project closed May 16, 2018. The bid by R&M Construction was the lowest bid at around $4.3 million. The town had just over $4 million avail- able for the project, with town staff noting there is a shortfall of $431,200. "It is staff's opinion the bids came in over budget due to some large projects in Toronto that are taking a lot of the region's rock and stone, secondly, the in-water works must be completed within a narrow timing window (July 1-Sept. 15) as dictated by regulatory agencies," said Chris Mark, director of parks and open space. "If the town was to refuse the low bid, it is very possible costs will increase be- tween now and 2019 when the project would be retendered." Mark recommended Oakville council approve the $450,000 funding request, not- ing the landscape improvements already constructed within Oakville Harbour through the Sixteen Mile Creek West land- scape rehabilitation plan have been well received by the community. He said there are several more phases of the rehabilitation plan to complete and the improvements to the waterfront trail be- tween Tannery Park and Waterworks Park are a key element of the overall master plan. With council's approval of the addition- al funds, work on the Tannery Park-Water- works Park capital project is scheduled to begin July 1.
