"We called the (town) originally and were told it was private lands and not their responsibility. Then we called the region and were given the run around." In a letter issued May 16, the region's road opera- tions co-ordinator Heather Colterman replied to Greenbriar Drive resident Eddie Blaauw, noting that "due to the location of the fence being between his property and Hydro One's right-of-way, the region considers this to be a pri- vate matter between him- self and Hydro One and therefore neither the Town of Oakville nor the Region of Halton have jurisdiction to maintain the fence." So Blaauw turned to the utility company. But con- versations with Hydro One have been nothing but frus- trating. According to Blaauw, some of the representatives he spoke with said the fence did not belong to Hy- dro One. However, another representative said it did, but noted the utility com- pany would not pay for all the repairs. "They said they would give us $20 per linear metre to fix it, but said they would need to inspect it before they provided that money," said Blaauw, who figures he has about 14 linear me- tres of fence on his proper- ty. Under the Hydro One policy explained to him, he said he might get about $280 toward the fence's re- pair. A private contractor quoted him $1,600 for the fence work. "We are pretty upset," said Blaauw. "We were pre- pared to pay something to- ward it, but this is unfair."
