Very few things are tru- ly great and even fewer peo- ple deserve to be described as heroes. Terry Fox, however, I be- lieve is an exception. For a 21-year-old to want to help others, at an age when many young adults are self-centred, is com- mendable, but what he did in attempting to achieve that goal is beyond remark- able. I will never be able to comprehend how someone could run the equivalent of almost a marathon a day (42 kilometres) for 143 consecu- tive days (5,373 km) - and with one prosthetic leg. He was exhausted and in great pain at times. It was all done by Fox in the name of raising money for cancer research. Morefor cancer research. For all that has been written about Terry Fox in the 37 years since he died, I was expecting significant mainstream media cover- age and personal reflections marking what would have been his 60th birthday. 1981 when, just before I turned 19, I entered, with an athletic background but not much training, the Labatt's marathon in Toronto. I fin- ished it, in three hours and 23 minutes, but I was like a zombie near the end and it took me almost two weeks to recover. That puts into perspec- tive, for me, what Fox did, then add in that what he ac- complished inspired mil- lions of people around the world to participate in an- nual Terry Fox runs. One of my life's regrets is that I wasn't lined up along Lakeshore Road on July 13, 1980 to cheer on the curly- haired, freckle-faced Fox when he ran through Oak- ville. Whatever my curly- haired, freckle-faced 17- year-old self was doing that day, it couldn't have been as interesting as seeing the in- spirational Fox in action.
