AyA Kitchens of oAKville 1195 north service roAdwest 905.847.1522 ayaoakville.com finished second in the judg- es' scoring at the camp and described Guthrie's pas- sion for debate as unmis- takable and truly inspir- ing. "Because of debate I feel much more comfort- able talking to strangers, networking and giving pre- sentations. I still find it dif- ficult, but nevertheless im- mensely rewarding." Unlike Li and Saleh, Miltonian Medha Wadhwa didn't exactly suffer from stage fright during her in- troduction to debating. Far from it. "Growing up, I always liked to make these little speeches about things I was passionate about." But while the desire to express herself was strong, the 16-year-old summer camp instructor admits she wasn't always doing so effectively. Until, that is, White Oaks' debate team came in- to the picture. "One of the biggest things the debate team has taught me is with most things in life, it's not a black and white situation," she explained. "And I've learned to think more crit- ically." Modeling itself after parliamentary procedure, the White Oaks camp fea- tured a total of 16 rounds of debate - with topics rang- ing from funding for the arts, the government's ob- ligation to divulge news about the world ending in three days and abolishing Batman's No Kill Policy - over the course of the week. Mixed in were various exercises designed to boost students' argument-form- ing ability and hone their debate-related skill set. Said Saleh, "Posture, hand gestures, your tone, even knowing when to pause... these can have a huge impact on how you're judged. "I'm much more confi- dent now. I'm able to think more creatively and criti- cally and have learned to work as part of a team. I know these things will help a lot in whatever career I pursue." Whether it was sea- soned debaters polishing their skills or shy novice campers finding their voice, Guthrie said this summer's program was perhaps the best to date. "The quality of student performances; yeah it was a really good group." With her enthusiasm clearly showing through, Wadhwa said she thor- oughly enjoys every aspect of debate - whether it be the adrenaline that creeps in at competition time or the meticulous prep work in- volved. "So many of us (debat- ers) are constantly reading books and keeping up with current events. I'm so much more informed now I love that part of it." COMMUNITY Miltonian Amr Saleh serves as a camp instructor. Graham Paine / Metroland
