On Sept. 27, Halton Re- gional Police Service fraud unit detectives made an ar- rest following an investiga- tion into an alleged 16- month online courtship. The victim, a woman from Oakville, was reportedly defrauded of a significant amount of money due to the alleged actions of a man. Paulo Egbobawaye, 35, of Hamilton was charged with the following: • Fraud over $5,000 • Identity fraud • Possession of property obtained by crime • Laundering proceeds of crime • Breach of probation He'll appear in Milton Court on Oct. 30. Police are reminding residents to be cautious of online and often fictitious individuals on legitimate dating sites whose ability to travel or meet in person is limited. In many cases, the individual will claim to be from North America butfrom North America butf currently living or working abroad and therefore un- able to meet in person. Once the relationship grows stronger the individ- ual will claim some form of hardship that requires the transfer of funds to them, often by wire transfer. • Never send money or e- transfers to someone you have never met. • Check your facts and do your research; do not ac- cept cheques for cashing on someone else's behalf. • If in doubt, seek some help or advice. A sober sec- ond look at a situation from a trusted outsider, can often provide clarity and insight. For additional informa- tion on this and many other prevalent scams, refer to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.an- tifraudcentre.ca.
