Now, many years after moving to Oakville from her oceanfront property in Nova Scotia, the lifelong swimmer has found "an un- believably beautiful con- nection to the lake." "It is absolutely stun- ning to swim out in the a.m. with the moon and stars above you and return with a gorgeous sunrise." Even while basking in the beauty of Lake Como, Italy and the turquoise wa- ters of the Bahamas, Hughes missed the lake. "It has become a connec- tor for me, making Oak- ville more of a home." A swim teacher, coach and masters swimmer, Hughes is also a Great Lakes Open Water Adven- tures' (GLOW) member, a group based out of Oak- ville, but attracting people from throughout the GTA and as far away as Guelph and Richmond Hill. GLOW holds regular swim events - from daily sunrise swims off Corona- tion Park, to more demand- ing events like Around the Toronto Island swim; a one-mile swim in all the Great Lakes within 24 hours, and a 24-hr relay in Lake Ontario to raise funds and awareness for the pro- tection of the Great Lakes. The concept of GLOW was founded in 2005 but be- came more formalized two years ago when the group launched Great Lakes Trust, said Janice Barker. "The goal is very simple. We want to encourage peo- ple living by the Great Lakes to be associated with the Great Lakes," said Barker. "Since we started offering our daily swims, more than 2,000 people (in the GLOW Facebook com- munity) have joined us at different times and in dif- ferent ways." Swimmers around the world have even shared sunrise swim experiences in their local water bodies with the local GLOW com- munity, she added. GLOW members are a mix of men and women, ag- es and levels of experience. "There are everything from experienced Ironman athletes to people who are just learning to swim. The goal of GLOW is to make ev- eryone comfortable in the water regardless of their experience and safety is paramount. We respect the LAKE ONTARIO POSITIVELY 'GLOWS' FOR THESE OAKVILLE SWIMMERS KATHY YANCHUS kyanchus@metroland.com NEWS See - page 41
