Younger sister Audrey Carle made a remark- able recovery after colliding with another skater in warm- up prior to the pre-novice women's short program. Still a little shaken, she was 10th after the short program. But the 12-year-old rebounded the next day with strong com- bination jumps to earn the highest score in the free skate, 64.59, to rocket up the stand- ings and claim the silver med- al. Skate Oakville's Grayson Long also earned a silver med- al in the pre-novice men's divi- sion. Long was second after short program and though he had the highest score in the free skate, he was edged for thefree skate, he was edged for thef gold by less than a point by John Kim. "I had been skating clean programs in practice, so I had pretty high expectations for myself." Long landed three double Axels, one in the short pro- gram and two in the free skate, and also pulled off the double flip, double loop combinationflip, double loop combinationf that he called "my nemesis" to finish with a personal bestfinish with a personal bestf score of 90.78. The 11-year-old Ecole Ele- mentaire Patricia-Picknell student said is now looking for- ward to his first Skate Canada Challenge. "It's exciting and nerve- racking," he said. "This is pret- ty much nationals for our level because it's highest competi- tion we can go to." Skate Oakville teammate Christian Nainer was fourth. Like Long, he made up ground with his free program but missed the podium by 1.27 points. Continuing the trend of strong free programs, Oak- ville's Natalie Walker, who skates out of the Milton Skat- ing Club, climbed from eighth after the short program to earn the silver medal in the junior women's division. "It was pretty tight after the short program," the 15-year- old said. "I knew if I skated well and landed all of my elements, I could hopefully move up." Walker posted a high score of 80.29 in the free skate to set up the closest finish of the com- petition. The top three skaters were separated by just .71 points, with Walker's overall score of 123.09 edging York Re- gion's Hana Watanabe by .02. "It wasn't a personal best, but it was one of the best skates I've had," she said. Skate Oakville's Nicole Bo- lender and Christian Nainer also earned a spot on the podi- um with a third-place finish in pre-novice dance. The duo fin- ished among the top in all three dances to earn the bronze.
