In the wake of a fatal Nov. 5 accident in Oak- ville that saw a 27-year-old Mississauga man killed and a 22-year-old Welland man charged with im- paired driving causing death, Crime Stoppers of Halton is asking residents to help police get impaired drivers off the streets. The non-profit, non-po- lice organization that en- courages members of the public to anonymously communicate informa- tion regarding criminal activity, in exchange for cash, emphasized that if residents suspect an im- paired driver on the road they should call 911 to re- port it directly and imme- diately to police. However, if residents know of or suspect a habit- ual impaired driver and wish to report them, but remain anonymous they can contact Crime Stop- pers. Halton Crime Stoppers director David Wood not- ed that so far this year, im- paired driving tips to Hal- ton Crime Stoppers have resulted in licence sus- pensions, criminal charg- es, vehicle impound- ments, and several other Highway Traffic Act of- fences.fences.f He argued those tips di- rectly helped improve the safety of local roads and communities, and may have prevented the next horrific, heartbreaking and completely prevent- able tragedy. "Our mission is to re- duce crime in Halton Re- gion through community education and engage- ment in partnership with the public, the police, and the media, and by provid- ing citizens the ability to provide information with guaranteed anonymity to deter and solve crime, with rewards offered for tips that lead to an arrest," said Wood. "We appreciate the im- paired driving tips we re- ceive from the public and are proud that these tips can and do directly trans- late into effective action by Halton police to get im- paired drivers off our roads." He said there are no shortage of reasons for residents to participate with Halton police, noting there have been 500 im- paired driving arrests in Halton so far this year- a number that is only expec- ted to increase as the holi- day season approaches. Tips can be submitted to Halton Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.haltoncrimestop- pers.ca. SUSPECT A HABITUAL IMPAIRED DRIVER IS OPERATING IN HALTON?
