GIVING TUESDAY GIVING TUESDAY GIVING TUESDAYGiving Tuesday GIVING TUESDAY GIVING TUESDAYGiving Tuesday Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two economically driven shopping promotions but a more selfless day, Giving Tuesday, has also made an appearance in Canadian traditions and will be recognized this year on Tuesday, Nov. 27. A day focused on giving and volunteer- A day focused on giving and volunteer- A day focused on giving and volunteer ing, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for charities, companies and individuals to rally for favourite causes and think about others. The movement, which began in the US in 2012, and came to Canada the fol- lowing year, was the brainchild of the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City's 92nd Street Y. Last year GivingTuesday attracted more than 6000 partners. GivingTuesday contin- ued to see growth in donations reported by CanadaHelps and other online donation platforms. Since GivingTuesday started in 2013, CanadaHelps has seen an increase of 468 per cent in donations on the day. The organization also reported a 54 per cent spike in new monthly donations com- pared to last year. In the USA, organizers re- ported that $274 million was raised online in 24 hours, while acknowledging that offline donations still account for the majority of fi- nancial donations. Charitable donations are just one way that people got involved; volunteering and other forms of giving are an important part of the annual event with individuals, fami- lies, and work colleagues getting behind nu- merous initiatives such as sock and cloth- ing drives, helping out at local food banks, signing up to donate blood or organs, acts of kindness and much more. Star Metroland Media, publisher of the Oakville Beaver, is a supporter of Giving Tuesday and is promoting this initiative and giving charity groups a voice through the company's many publications. "This movement fits perfectly with our own goals of connecting and bettering communities. Every year, we help dozens of community groups and non-profit organi- zations across the communities we serve with promotion and stories to share their mandates, events and charity initiatives. As the voice of the community, we know this is our responsibility,'" said Vice President, Regional Publisher Star Metroland Media, Kelly Montague.
