Angela Skorulski, 56, was never seen alive again after a man wearing a hoo- die and gloves left her Oak- ville apartment in Febru- ary 2017. Assistant Crown Nick Chiera alleged that man was James Scordino of Fort Erie, during his opening address as Scordino's first- degree murder trial got un- derway in a Milton court Feb. 14. Chiera noted surveil- lance cameras at Skorul- ski's condominium com- plex at 205 Lakeshore Rd. West showed Skorulski and a man going up to her unit at around 8 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017. "At around 10 p.m., the same man is seen leaving the apartment with his head down, hood up, wear- ing gloves - something not seen before," said Chiera. "He leaves through the stairwell. Not the elevator." After three weeks Sko- rulski's family became con- cerned that they had not heard from their loved one in some time and contacted police. The court heard from Alex Lankshear, who was a patrol constable with Hal- ton police on March 8, 2017. He noted on that evening, shortly before 9 p.m., he was called to Skorulski's unit where he and another officer were ultimately able to gain entry. "When we entered, I im- mediately detected an odour, which through my experience, I believed to be coming from a decompos- ing body," said Lankshear. The patrol constable said he proceeded inside and found Skorulski's bad- ly decomposed body on her living room floor. She had been shot four times, including once in the back of the head at close range. The officers checked the unit and found no one else was present. They contacted the Oak- ville Criminal Investiga- tions Bureau and an inves- tigation got underway. Scordino was arrested on April 12, 2017. He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first- degree murder. Chiera said Scordino and Skorulski were busi- ness acquaintances, who both worked in the elevator installation and parts sup- ply industry. They also had a personal relationship, having purchased a high- end Oakville condo togeth- er, although Scordino nev- er moved in. Prior to Skorulski's death, Chiera said the pair had been experiencing le- gal issues related to their work. They were being sued by the University of Toronto, and Skorulski had engaged in a cross claim against Scordino. The Crown said the vic- tim was also trying to get Scordino to sign a docu- ment that would eliminate her liability in the Univer- sity of Toronto matter. He alleged Scordino attended Skorulski's apartment on Feb. 13, 2017 on the pretext of signing this document but murdered her instead. During the testimony of Crown witness and foren- sic identification officer Det. Robert Felske, the jury saw photographs of the gruesome crime scene that greeted police on March 8, 2017. The photos showed Sko- rulski on the living room floor of her apartment, sprawled on her back with a large pool of dried blood around her head. A black and white scarf covered much of her face. Large amounts of blood stained the cushions of a nearby couch. Felske testified there were no signs of forced en- try into the apartment. He said there were two bullet holes in the couch. A bullet recovered from the backrest of the couch was found to be covered in hair similar to that of the victim. Another bullet hole and a burn pattern were found on a nearby pillow. An additional bullet hole was found in one of the condo unit's windows. Felske said no bullet casings were found in the apartment, which he said meant the firearm was a re- volver - the casings are not ejected, or the killer took the time to pick them up. Chiera said it is believed that the victim was mur- dered on Feb. 13, 2017, how- ever, because of the ad- vanced decomposition of her body that cannot be de- termined for certain. Felske said police exe- cuted a search warrant at Scordino's Hamilton work- place, Modern Elevator, on April 20, 2017. They discovered a re- volver hidden in the ceiling tiles of an unused office. The weapon contained five spent bullet casings. Police also discovered a stash of clothing, including a hoodie, in a garbage bag, at this workplace. Felske said he was tasked with checking the revolver and bullet casings MAN WEARING HOODIE, GLOVES SEEN LEAVING CONDO WHERE OAKVIILE WOMAN FOUND DEAD, COURT HEARS DAVID LEA NEWS See - page 15
